How long do you think it will be alight for? And what damage do you think it will do to the infrastructure of the island?

But how long this year will
it burn? And pose a danger to tourists

I read earlier that they think they were started deliberately and that arrests will be made

Depends on the ground conditions and available combustible materials. The Fort McMurray wildfire in Canada (the city I live in) started on 1 May 2016. It blew into the city on 3 May, forcing the evacuation of 72,000 people and the destruction of 2,400 homes and buildings.

It travelled out into the wilderness and burned underground for a while.

It was finally declared out on 2 August.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 24/07/2023 00:28

It was also suspected to have been started by a human - either a dropped cigarette or the hot exhaust of an ATV out in the back of beyond.

tourists choose to go there, knowing there's a probability of fires.
Why your concern for them but not the inhabitants?

Every time I hear radio news faffing on about poor tourists I want to scream.

Have a lovely sunny holiday.

Agreed. It's the people who live there, who risk losing their homes and livelihoods (and loved ones ) that I am thinking of

I was in Rhodes until last weekend, feeling very sorry for the local people and can’t get the animals out of my mind either - so many donkeys, goats, cats etc about. Also the historical sites and vineyards. It is a beautiful island and everyone we met was lovely - such an awful situation, I hope the fires can be brought under control as soon as possible.

Soconfusedandbroken · 24/07/2023 06:43

I absolutely care and worry for the locals. I think the tourists need to be stopped going there. The continuous plane loads of them need to be stopped (thanks Ryan air!)
This is coming from someone who was in the Asian tsunami. So I absolutely DO know the devastation of a local community. And it’s a worry and on my mind.

I'm sure the staff and owners of hotels, bars and restaurants in the sizeable area of the island unaffected by the fires will be grateful for that..

Why don't we leave the decision on whether some tourists should continue to fly to the Greek authorities?

Pigeonbilly · 24/07/2023 07:55

The Greek Islands need tourism. They are only just getting back on their feet after Covid. Tourism is their main income for 6 months of the year.

Please don't try to bring detail, economics or even whose trainset this actually is into the debate.

There's another thread started up with reference to Kos and already the cries have started about of posters are popping up advising against travel ..... usual logic "just in case" etc....

Fgs, this is argumentative! I’m simply concerned for the island. And meant RIGHT NOW, tourist shouldn’t be continuing to add to pressure in areas where there aren’t facilities! Not the entire island.

this wasn’t me wanting an argument, I was simply asking if anyone knew the trajectory of a wildfire and it’s after effects in terms of pollution. Jeeez!

@Soconfusedandbroken

I'm ctrying not to be argumentative but I'm certainly confused about what you want....here's why:

. I think the tourists need to be stopped going there. The continuous plane loads of them need to be stopped

then:

I’m simply concerned for the island. And meant RIGHT NOW, tourist shouldn’t be continuing to add to pressure in areas where there aren’t facilities! Not the entire island.
