To hate the noise?

HeathenPlayingHouse · 23/07/2023 15:52

I'm hiding in the kitchen because the living room is too noisy, but I still cant escape because the noise carries so much in such a small house.

I sit down and on my left, I can hear the noise of dinner cooking in the oven. On my right is DS playing with a loud toy, usually alternating between something obnoxiously musical or smashing through Lego. Plus his difficulty with emotional regulation (ASD) means there'll be a few screams here and there as well.

Behind me is the sound of the stereo, because DP wants to play music. Plus the sound of the video game that he's playing in the desk in the corner. I ask him to turn the sound down a bit because it's blaring, and he decides to turn it off. Which means instead there'll be the sound of whatever YouTube video he's watching on his phone.

On the plus side, the fact that we're trying to limit TV time for DS means I don't have that noise to contend with as well. I feel bad because I don't want silence, it's just the fact that there's noise coming from so many different sources that it makes my brain want to shut off for a moment of peace.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Yes I'd hate that and I am autistic. I can cope with it for short periods of time but not ongoing. Can you invest in some ear defenders or get out on a solo walk to decompress

QuestionableMouse · 23/07/2023 15:54

Me! I have had to go outside in the past to escape! Feels like my head is going to explode!

Bluetooth headphones for the DH and Loop earplugs for you my help! The loops are great - reduce the noise without leaving you totally deaf!

Seasideanticscanleadtosandybuckets · 23/07/2023 15:54

Google misophonia op.

HeathenPlayingHouse · 23/07/2023 16:20

Thank you for your responses, it's nice to know I'm not just being weird about it!

@Seasideanticscanleadtosandybuckets It's funny you mention that, I was trying to explain it to DP the other night- not to drip feed, but he assumes I just don't like loud nose because I've got a history of ear-related illness that needed surgery. It's genuinely not that, it's the combined noise that makes me feel overwhelmed.

Anyway, I was looking it up to try to explain it, and misophonia did come up but I always assumed that wasn't the issue because I don't really have a problem with the sounds individually.

It is sensory overload! My dh is just like you, I am like you when I have PMS.

I am buying DH noise cancelling headphones for Christmas.

Bookish88 · 23/07/2023 16:36

I'm similar, and have misophonia. Flare ear buds were a game changer for me.

HeathenPlayingHouse · 23/07/2023 16:37

I shouldn't be too surprised considering I have other sensory issues.

Most of my clothes need to feel loose, I hate socks and I have to keep my hair short because I can't stand the feeling of it on my shoulders!

Earplugs

Bigsislookingforadvice · 23/07/2023 16:39

Loop ear buds help me massively with feeling overwhelmed with life's noises

HeathenPlayingHouse · 23/07/2023 16:42

I'll look into the earplugs, but they'll definitely be a last resort. To be honest, the sensory issues also mean I hate having anything in my ears.

Thank you all xx

I find this too - absolute overload, it's horrible

PollyCreo · 23/07/2023 16:49

This is why I live alone with my cats. I lived with an ex partner for eight years and every night he made so much noise doing EVERYTHING, I was like STFU already 😭

Changeychang · 23/07/2023 16:56

Could you have ADHD, do you get other forms of sensory overload?

HeathenPlayingHouse · 23/07/2023 17:41

@PollyCreo I've often thought that myself 😂

@Changeychang It's something I have considered, but I haven't really followed it up because at this point in my life, I'm not sure how a possible diagnosis would change things.

I do have some sensory issues, mainly centred around my clothes/hair. I'm much better than I was when I was little, especially about food. Although admittedly I just freaked out a few minutes ago when DP offered me a teaspoon of mint jelly when he knows I hate it.

His (jokingly) helpful response to the noise issue was "well if we turn one noise up, it will drown out the rest". Gee, thanks love!

I'm completely neurotypical and that amount of noise would drive me insane very quickly. You don't have to have adhd, misophonia or anything else to not enjoy constant clashing noises.

FictionalCharacter · 23/07/2023 18:09

What’s wrong with him? Does he just enjoy tormenting you? What with this and being really thoughtless about the noise.
I’d find that level of noise coming from everywhere completely intolerable.

Glemarand · 23/07/2023 18:40

YANBU. I absolutely can't cope with that level of different noises. My DH enjoys listening to podcasts/sport/talk radio on his phone with no headphones wandering around the house with it at full blast. Drives me absolutely batshit. He can't hear when people ask him something because he's so engrossed in his boring shit. It's not like it's something he has always done because smart phones didn't bloody well exist when we met!! This is a lovely new hobby of his 😡

Add in teenagers and a autistic pre teen and dogs and I have no idea where my sanity is! Grrr!

Island77 · 23/07/2023 20:11

listening to ‘brown noise’ -check it on youtube - it’s a bit more calming than ‘whute noise’ on your headphones might calm you down.
I have sensory issues and it calms me down.
It also drowns out the sounds of other outside sources a bit.

Island77 · 23/07/2023 20:13

sorry i misspelled ‘white noise’ . i also use headphones with active noise blocking.

No, he was really just teasing. It was just my instant reaction, because I really think it's gross.

As for the noise issue, we're just different- he likes loud music, I don't. If I ask him to turn it down, he will. He just tends to think that the best way to listen to music is to hear it in ALL rooms of the house. So I have to put my foot down, to save myself from booting it up his arse 😂
