To think it's important to leave info with someone trusted when you go abroad?

I've just come back from Spain and I looking at the news reports from Rhodes in horror........ such a terrible situation for everyone.
I always leave insurance/ itinerary/ copies of passports/ EHIC cards with a relative and copy it all to a webmail account that me and Dh can both access. My brother just leaves and we are lucky if he tells us when he is due back. If he was in Rhodes now I would be worried sick.

Do you just jump on a plane without a second thought or do you share your itinerary with someone?

You could scan all of the information into Dropbox or similar, meaning you can access from anywhere at any time.

I don’t think I’m circumstances such as Rhodes a relative havjng a photocopy of your passport would help however.

viques · 23/07/2023 10:37

That’s a very sensible thing to do. Another way to do it is to scan and send as an email to yourself and a trusted friend. Just remember your email login in case you lose your phone!

endofthelinefinally · 23/07/2023 10:40

Always share information with my siblings, including travel insurance details. If I am unconscious in a foreign hospital I want someone to contact my insurers.
I put their contact details in my passport and add a post it note with insurance info.

Merrilydancing · 23/07/2023 10:42

No I don’t, I don’t even take a photo of the travel insurance docs but a thread last night about someone worried about a family member in Rhodes has prompted me to rethink this.

megletthesecond · 23/07/2023 10:44

Yanbu. Paper copies, images on phone and emailed to myself. And copies emailed to a NOK in the UK.

Ponoka7 · 23/07/2023 10:44

I've got copies of two of my adult children's passports because I've done admin for them. They send me the policy numbers and flight numbers. I watch the airport shows and people have been able to fly because they've had photocopies of their passport and been validated by a phone contact.

EBearhug · 23/07/2023 10:45

I do. I'm single, I usually travel alone. I'd like to think someone would eventually search for my missing body...

Fidelina · 23/07/2023 10:49

I jump on a plane without a second thought. It tends to be last-minute, so often no one would necessarily know we’d left the country, far less where we’d gone. Just before Covid, we booked flights and an AirBnb on Sunday night around 7/8 pm, and were on the road to the airport by 5 am the next day. I think my mother called me on my mobile on the Thursday and said ‘What’s going on in the background?’ and I was on a vaporetto in Venice.

Lethalinformation · 23/07/2023 10:52

Yes definitely tell family where we're going but on back of awful situation in Rhodes will share more information with them in future

TooHotAndHumid · 23/07/2023 11:01

@Fidelina
I couldn't do that! 😱

We do to a certain extent.

Never thought to give passport numbers - but I do have a photocopies in the "important box".

I usually let the dog minder and my sister have details of where we are going, dates etc. and possible 3rd party contact numbers if they can't get hold of us the usual way - text, WhatsApp, email etc.

My sister has keys to our house and knows where the "important box" is, and vice-versa.

This 100%

Your phone knows where you are, so when you didn’t turn up for work etc that missing body must be yours…

LlynTegid · 23/07/2023 11:16

Always leave details of where I am staying and when scheduled to travel. Have not gone on a package holiday for many years though.

Family members have house keys and know where the important information is kept.

Unless your phone is lost or stolen.

watersprites · 23/07/2023 11:24

hadn't thought about some of these suggestions.

TrueScrumptious · 23/07/2023 11:27

No, I never leave details with anyone. People aren’t even going to know I’ve gone away. But I agree that having copies of things and backed up digitally is a good idea.

GnomeDePlume · 23/07/2023 11:32

We do - passport numbers, insurance details, roadside assistance (we normally drive).

As a PP said, if we are lying unconscious in a hospital who will know where to get that information. Also, no point in me leaving details with DH, he's dyslexic and is far worse when under pressure.

BCCoach · 23/07/2023 11:34

Often travel last minute for work. DP and DS know where I am if they bother to check my location on their phones (they clearly don’t “oh you were in Denmark, I thought you were in Ireland..” 🙄). Work knows where I am as we have to book flights and hotels through company travel agency (which is a major PITA compared to booking direct). That’s enough for me.

Spendonsend · 23/07/2023 11:42

I give flight numbers, insurance details and picture of passport to my mum.

My dh travels for work and doesnt even say where he is sometimes but his company know so theyd be the ones sorting out the insurance if he broke his leg or something.

Thefieldisfallow · 23/07/2023 11:46

I'm not sure who I'd tell.

I'd feel uncomfortable leaving all that info with someone though, like I was a child!

EBearhug · 23/07/2023 10:45

I'm single and nobody would care if something happened to me so not sure what the point of leaving my itinerary with someone would be.
I don't even have insurance for my next trip though I have an EHIC card so a good idea to scan that and my new passport.

DelphiniumBlue · 23/07/2023 12:01

Yes, I email a copy of everything, bookings and insurance, to my Mum or more recently. to my adult sons.

Mushroo · 23/07/2023 12:02

No I don’t, family know which country we’re going to and dates but that’s about it.

I probably should leave insurance details with someone reading all this!

zingally · 23/07/2023 12:05

I always email all the holiday details to my mum and sister. Seems sensible to me!

BashfulClam · 23/07/2023 12:07

We have photos of passports etc in our e-mails. I couldn’t leave details with my mum as she is descending into dementia and mil just panics that we are leaving and cries.
