Wtf is going on with my eye ?

I’ve noticed this a lot recently and wondered if anyone knew.

everytime I wake up my vision is different in one eye. I can see clearly in it, it’s not at all blurred but everything is duller. it’s more noticeable with colours and my white background on my phone

so as I’m typing this on the white background I’m closing my right eye and using my left eye it looks normal. Bright, white and when I was reading a post on here I could easily differentiate the white and green OP posts. But if I shut my left eye and use my right eye the screen doesn’t look bright white it looks greyish and very dull. If I look at another post I can hardly tell the difference between the normal white posts and the ops green post. It’s all sharp and clear to read but it’s the colours that are different

anyone know anything about this? It gradually gets better throughout the morning and is fine after half an hour after i get up. It’s just a bit weird and unsettling. I don’t wear glasses

You need to get it checked.

CC4712 · 23/07/2023 09:44

What did the optician say? I assume you've had this checked? If not- please do asap!

AnnaNims · 23/07/2023 09:47

Get it checked. It might be nothing, it might be an issue with your cornea.

Eyespywithmylittleye · 24/07/2023 23:05

I had an eye test but they couldn’t really do much because I wasn’t having the problem at the time. By the time I’ve woken up, got ready and driven to the opticians and it’s gone as it’s only really a problem for the first 30 minutes or so after waking up. It’s weird though. I sleep on my back and don’t rub my eyes at all. I can read words everything still looks clear it’s just the colours are very very clearly much duller in one eye than the other. It’s quite unnerving

Go to the doctor. Could be something like the early stages of Graves' disease, diabetic eye disease, anything. Get it properly checked out

Calling · 24/07/2023 23:07

The average high street optician may not have the latest equipment to find out. You need an opthamologist. Good luck. Go soon!

Eyespywithmylittleye · 24/07/2023 23:09

This is just an example of 2 different colours but it’s what it looks like when I look at my phone screen (white background) in the morning for example. The left side is the white normal colour I see in one eye. The grey side is the full version I see in the other eye. It’s worst on waking up and gradually just gets better the longer I’m up and about and usually after 30 minutes or so both eyes are seeing the white like the left side.

it happens with other colours too but it’s most noticeable with white and I notice it more as my phone has a white background

Go to the gp. It could be a problem with your optic nerve.

Hankunamatata · 24/07/2023 23:10

Have you been checking for diabetes or high blood pressure/cholesterol. All can cause eye conditions

RedRosesPinkLilies · 24/07/2023 23:10

Definitely go to GP. Can you get seen first thing? Did the opticians take photos of your retina?

Eyespywithmylittleye · 24/07/2023 23:11

Apologies I also should have mentioned too, I had an extra scan in my eye test, can’t recall the name but I paid extra money for it and they used it to look at my eye and if it was healthy or not. The optician said it was likely nothing bad as its not all the time and it gets better when I wake up and get up but they didn’t know what it was

Go to your GP….

KickingEAP · 24/07/2023 23:13

Sounds a bit like optic neuritis. I'm speaking from experience. You need a eye health exam with the optician. In this area, if you went to A&E you'd be referred to Specsavers who in turn can refer for an emergency opthalmology appointment (it was same day for me) if they seem it necessary. My symptoms were more extreme but it's definitely worth checking out.

KickingEAP · 24/07/2023 23:13

Cross posted, sorry.

Eyespywithmylittleye · 24/07/2023 23:15

It was my GP who originally said go to the optician, they said they cannot do anything with eyes whatsoever and anything eye related should be seen by the optician! I managed to book an eye test for the next day as early as I could.

I didn’t have my blood pressure and blood sugar checked specifically for this but it’s been checked in the past for unrelated reasons and has never been a problem. I also should have included that I’m 30 years old and my BMI is 18 and I’m healthy generally.

You should get your blood pressure checked. Lots of pharmacies do it for free. Tesco definitely does. Mine was high at 35 with normal BMI.

Zooeyzebra · 24/07/2023 23:25

I also think optic neuritis. It took ages to get diagnosed when I had it. Optician didn’t pick it up and neither did gp or emergency doctor. I eventually went to a private ophthalmologist who sent me on to moorfields. Do you have something similar to moorfields near you?

Oceanus · 24/07/2023 23:58

It says a lot when a GP sends a patient off to see an optician rather than an ophthalmologist. It says a lot about the GP and it's not good. Good luck OP, I hope it's nothing.

In fairness to the GP he said the optician would refer me to an ophthalmologist if needed and could be anything from the very same day to a longer wait depending on how serious it was! I didn’t realise that.

My vision went dull and cloudy when I started developing cataracts, one eye was worse than the other but cataracts can usually be seen by an optician so probably not that.
Go back to your optician and ask them to refer you to the eye clinic. I think you need to see someone more specialised .

stayathomegardener · 25/07/2023 00:12

I'm like this post Covid. Officially my eyes are fine 🙄

General practitioners don’t have the specialised equipment opticians have. It was an optician who suspected I had glaucoma, she referred me straight away. She also saw my cataracts forming and then did an urgent referral when they got really bad very quickly.

Oceanus · 25/07/2023 00:27

I wouldn't expect a GP to have the tech but I would expect them to recognise this has the potential to be serious so the OP should be sent off to see an expert. Being sent off to see an optician signals "oh it's nothing so feel free to ignore it". Maybe it's nothing. Maybe it's something. I know somebody for whom it was something. So I wouldn't delay it any further.

Creamsleeves · 25/07/2023 00:44

Another vote for optic neuritis, dull colours where the first sign for me. The optician missed it on 2 occasions. I was eventually sent to a&e and they referred me to an ophthalmologist.

CallieQ · 25/07/2023 00:59

You should go to an eye casualty and get the back of your eyes looked at
