Delilah isn’t Appropriate for Kids to Sing

Wenfy · 22/07/2023 13:09

Tom Jones is apparently complaining about a kids’ choir being banned from singing it at the Rugby, but it’s a horrible, horrible song that glorifies female violence.

So the real question is why do people sing it at the Rugby in the first place!!

I think it's inappropriate for anyone to sing. But I appear to be in a minority of 1 in this!

caringcarer · 22/07/2023 13:21

I used to get mad when exh took DS2 in his car and he would home singing Sex Bomb. He was 6 at the time and started singing it in a supermarket once.

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/07/2023 13:23

I think it's a terrific song but only when Sir Tom Jones sings it.

drpet49 · 22/07/2023 13:24

Oh here we go.

I couldn’t get my knickers in a twist about this.

Written by a woman.

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/07/2023 13:26

@KimberleyClark , the song was written by men

42wordsfordrizzle · 22/07/2023 13:26

The problem is the source material, but we're not allowed to ban the Bible.

KimberleyClark · 22/07/2023 13:27

Yes I know that having googled, should have checked, but I'm sure that Ion e heard it was written by a woman.

frecklejuice · 22/07/2023 13:30

Is this really something people are bothered about?!

Wenfy · 22/07/2023 13:33

These are the lyrics in case anyone’s interested. Disgusting

I saw the light on the night that I passed by her window
I saw the flickering shadows of love on her blind
She was my woman
As she deceived me, I watched and went out of my mind
My, my, my, Delilah
Why, why, why, Delilah
I could see, that girl was no good for me
But I was lost like a slave that no man could free
At break of day when that man drove away, I was waiting
I crossed the street to her house and she opened the door
She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more
My, my, my, Delilah
Why, why, why, Delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me Delilah, I just couldn't take anymore
She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more
My, my, my, Delilah
Why, why, why, Delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me, Delilah, I just couldn't take anymore
Forgive me, Delilah, I just couldn't take anymore

I'm in Wales so our kids start singing it while they learn to talk.

CurlewKate · 22/07/2023 13:38

@frecklejuice "Is this really something people are bothered about?!"

Yep. Violence against women does bother me a bit.

Knackeredhamster · 22/07/2023 13:40

Don't listen to any Nick Cave then

Pottedpalm · 22/07/2023 13:40

Ban the rapper shit music, I say.

frecklejuice · 22/07/2023 13:41

It's a song, I can't get worked up over song lyrics from 1968!

Uhhh what???

You do know there’s not one biblical reference in the song right? It’s as much about Delilah in the Bible as Valerie is about Valerie Singleton.

CurlewKate · 22/07/2023 13:57

@Knackeredhamster
"Don't listen to any Nick Cave then"

Unlikely for him to be sung by children at a rugby match. But hey-nothing's impossible.

CurlewKate · 22/07/2023 13:59

@frecklejuice "It's a song, I can't get worked up over song lyrics from 1968!"

I'd forgotten that violence against women is lost in the mists of history.

Hereward1332 · 22/07/2023 14:08

Despite it's violent subject, it's not glorifying the violence. Rather the opposite imo. Men of Harlech is not exactly a peaceful idyll

CurlewKate · 22/07/2023 13:16

You're definitely not, @CurlewKate - I can't bear it and a lot of my female friends feel the same.

Celebrating femicide in a song is beyond the pale.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 22/07/2023 14:13

Whilst we are at it we can also ban all the crap rap songs, and what about banning Miss Otis Regrets and Banks of the Ohio

drpet49 · 22/07/2023 14:18

Pottedpalm · 22/07/2023 13:40

Ban the rapper shit music, I say.

This! That music is far more damaging to young people than Delilah.

dudsville · 22/07/2023 14:23

All songs, from any era, genre, etc., with lyrics like these are abhorrent.

Pandor · 22/07/2023 14:33

Are songs only allowed to be about rainbows and love and nice things?
