I have felt dreadful since this afternoon. Light-headed and nauseous and then then vomiting came and it hasn't gone away.

Even slowly sipped water is coming back up, I'm in a cold sweat, aches all over. I could cry.

This is going to be a long night.

I'm sorry, but I think you're just going to have to hang tough until it's all out.

Sleep in the bathroom with a duvet so you're next to the loo?

I hope it doesn't last long.

Greenshake · 21/07/2023 20:48

Break the time down. For example, do one thing till 21:15, then another till 21:45 etc. Sounds silly but it’s good for distraction. Thinking of you 🌷

lljkk · 21/07/2023 20:51

I have a stonking head cold that makes sleep tough. Being ill sucks !!

LapinR0se · 21/07/2023 20:54

Water is the worst thing you can drink. You need electrolytes. Do you have dioralyte? If not coke or sprite or lucozade will do. But you must let it go quite flat and sip it very slowly at room temperature (like 5ml every 10 minutes)

Yes, DH has actually just brought me some coke in and said the same so I am going to try that.

Ok good. Is it proper coke? Not diet

Things like this have to be endured unfortunately. I always think of something I like doing outside of the house like going for a nice coffee or pottering around a shop I like. Something really easy to do! Then I look forward to it and imagine in a few days I won't be bedbound and will feel ok enjoying a normal thing. It sounds stupid but it always helps me to remember how temporary feeling so awful is.

You can get through this!!

Poppyseed14 · 21/07/2023 21:06

Pop a spoonful of sugar in your coke OP. That will flatten it for you and settle your tummy x

Pammela · 21/07/2023 21:07

i find listening to a podcast or something in the background helps take my mind off of it a bit. I can never watch tv or anything. Then find a relatively comfortable position and try and fall asleep- don’t move at all!

I also don’t bother trying to drink for a few hours tbh..at least until after I’ve managed a bit of a nap, then I try again. Ice lollies are saviours in this house and we always manage them before anything else.

You will feel better again, it’s just dreadful at the time!

Summer2424 · 21/07/2023 21:07

Hi @Flamingogirl08 sorry you're unwell xx
Could you try chewing on some raw peeled ginger, hopefully it will help.
Hope you get better soon xx

Pammela · 21/07/2023 21:08

Also my family member who is consultant a&e says to sniff alcohol wipes for the nausea 🤷‍♀️

verabarbleen · 21/07/2023 21:20

Poor you it's horrible isn't it! I'm disgusting and rather sleep in bed with a bucket next to me than sleep in the bathroom . These things don't usually last long! You will get though!

Oh some good tips there. You're right about the not moving. I just about got into a comfy position earlier but stupidly moved and then needed to be sick again 😮‍💨

I’ve had the sickness bug this week - at one point coming out of both ends simultaneously, not pleasant at all!! The good news is it was over pretty quickly - I was sick every hour on the hour overnight for about 12 hours and then I was better. Did still feel sick but stopped being sick - think I’d just thrown everything up completely. I couldn’t keep water down either. Ice lollies can be good for hydration, or sucking ice cubes. Either lie in bed with a bucket, or get an air mattress if you have one and put it in the bathroom/as near as you can get. Cover it with a towel and put another towel over you for a blanket. I was really hot before I was sick so stripped down, hugged the toilet which was nice and cold! Then lay on the cool tiles - best feeling. After that I’d feel cold again so kept a towel on the floor to wrap round me, then fling off once I was hot again! It will pass soon, eventually there will be nothing else to throw up. Do keep drinking though - I was very dehydrated after it passed. Small sips slowly, you will absorb more than you throw back up. Sending hugs - not fun at all! Send DH out for microban and get him to spray down door handles etc so hopefully the rest of the family avoid it! Lucozade sport and watermelon are good too.

5128gap · 21/07/2023 21:41

Top tip: Anti histamine can really help. Ideally travel sickness tablets, but hay-fever ones will do.
Lie on your left side, keep very cool, especially round your face, have the window open and/or a fan.

Dashel · 21/07/2023 22:00

I deal with this by having the tv on in the bedroom and try and break it down into one show at a time.it’s better to have something else to focus on.

UncleRadley · 21/07/2023 22:06

I recently had a sickness bug that lasted 24 hours of hourly vomiting and then another four days of feeling horribly sick. I could only manage a rocket lolly to try and rehydrate, it was much more pleasant coming back up than the ill advised cup of tea! I was trying to watch the vampire diaries but really when it's that bad you just have to lie down and suffer until it's all out. Horrific!

GiraffeDoor · 21/07/2023 22:12

I'm also just coming out the other end. You have to actively remind yourself that it definitely won't last forever. Don't worry too much about dehydration for the first few hours, ie don't force yourself to drink if it's just coming straight back up again. And put your phone down! I listened to loads of bbc sounds podcasts - they've got flight of the conchords on there at the moment 👌🏻

LookingForRemoteWork · 21/07/2023 22:52

A tip from the night shift nurse when I was in hospital after having my son and couldn't stop throwing up: any drink with sugar in it (real sugar, not sweeteners) and have it lukewarm - it worked a treat for me when I'd been throwing up on water for hours.
I lived on lukewarm hot chocolate (vegan - I'm allergic to mil) and proper Ribena for days (not sure you can get Ribena without sweeteners now but Rocks do a lovely blackcurrant cordial with sugar in it if you have someone who can go shopping for you)

Nagado · 21/07/2023 23:36

I get these bugs quite a lot. I lay on the bathroom floor with a bucket in case I can’t make it to the loo. I sip full fat coke or lemonade that has gone flat and if I’ve got the energy, I drink lots of squash so I’ve got something to bring up, rather than just heaving with an empty stomach.

Tomorrow, send DH for diorylite (sp) and ready salted hoola hoops to nibble on.

My husband had a book about survival and the tip I use in real life from there is to swallow throat lozenges when you are having stomach flu, as they have anti-viral properties. This perhaps might help?
If you have Polish shop in the nearby, send your husband to buy SMECTA- it's powder that sucks in all the bugs from your stomach and bowel. Works basically like a sponge.
