"We will definitely let you know either way by X date at the latest"

X date arrives (today) and.....no notification. No "We regret to inform you..." email, no phone call, no nothing (and yes I have checked junk but their other emails went into my inbox).

I really want this job and have been on tenterhooks all week and now its 6pm on a Friday so no chance of finding out before next week. I am thinking that the reason they havent go in touch is that I havent got it and they are in touch with the successful candidates and I will receive the email early next week as they obviously dont want to burn bridges if someone turns them down.

They were interviewing for several posts and I feel that I interviewed well and I know that I have the specific skills that they are looking for. But of course I am aware that other people will have the skills and may have interviewed better so I would just rather know sooner than later if I havent got it!

I know that last minute things happen, illness etc but this has happened in all but one job I have interviewed for in the last few years. Its so frustrating!

I would've given them until about 4.30pm today and then emailed them.

I did this in the past when I was told I'd be informed by Friday and I had indeed got the job (my current job).

They apologised and said my line manager had been taken ill.

I did think about doing that but I really wasnt sure how to word it! Any advice on how to put it if I dont hear by early Monday afternoon?

Dear X

Thank you for an enjoyable interview on X date.

I was told I would be informed whether I was successful or not by (insert date), so I am wondering if there are any updates on this?

Many thanks

Usually if you haven't heard from the recruiter it's because the recruiter hasn't heard from the employer. Any recruiter should let you know the outcome as soon as they receive word of it.

I usually try to send out an update anyway just letting the candidate know we are still waiting etc. But it can slip my mind to do so if its a busy day.

I wouldn't do anything, if they want you they Will be in touch.

MuggleMe · 21/07/2023 22:26

You say you were told Friday, can you have an updated estimate on when you can expect to hear. Therefore politely not pushing for an actual answer (but clearly are).

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/07/2023 01:06

Thanks for the advice. Will email later on Monday if I dont hear before.

And yes, if they want me they willl be in touch, but if they keep me hanging until it suits them well thats not a company I want to work for so I will be asking the question.

I think not responding to candidates after interview is incredibly rude. I don’t expect to get a response for every job I’ve applied to, but if I’ve invested time and money in going to an interview and meeting them, I think it’s the least they can do, even if it’s just a copy paste ‘We’ve decided to go in a different direction’. They can decide how many people to interview so should keep the numbers manageable.

I wouldn’t chase the employer though. They would be in touch if they wanted me, but if they don’t reply, I don’t want to work there anyway as it implies they’re rude and /or overworked/too busy.
