To think should get a pay rise for getting a promotion

So I currently work in quite a heavy going responsible contract admin role in a construction company and have been acting as a so called senior unofficially for almost a year. Have just had appraisal to make this so called senior title official and there is no pay rise. Now I wasn’t expecting much as company wide everyone got a 3% rise in April and I know am lucky to get anything but I did expect something.l to acknowledge the new job title and extra responsibility.

I have been with the company for 6 years and have had to actively seek and get offered another job twice in that time to gain previous pay rises the last one being in Oct 2020. I am not a disruptive employee, and have had excellent feedback in my appraisal. I am based in Northern Ireland so salaries here are not as good as mainland UK or London for but still feel a bit let down. I am 40 and feel that now is my time to try and maximise my potential earning power as know am near the ceiling limit for of that.
My salary is £25k for a 4 day week. I was really thinking that should be seeing a pay rise of at least £2k but was honestly hoping for £4k. Because I work a shorter week now to look after my daughter and ideally in dream world would like another child and am currently ttc suppose do feel my leverage in even getting another job now wouldn’t be as good. Should I let the dust settle and speak to my line manager about this next week. He does already understand where I’m coming from. He has said it will be reconsidered at next years appraisal when have proved self
in role even though am already doing it.
What to do

I don't know what you can do, other than tell them you'll go back to your previous position, but you're not wrong. You should have been getting higher pay from the time you started the senior role as there was presumably no expectation that you'd only be acting up for a week or two. Seems like a complete piss take frankly!

noglow · 21/07/2023 17:54

Go back to the easier role?

FrivolousTreeDuck · 21/07/2023 17:58

That's crap - I'd expect at least a 5% pay rise for a promotion.

Motnight · 21/07/2023 17:59

Start looking for another job.

Go back to the previous position in the meantime.

Yellowlegobrick · 21/07/2023 18:26

Honestly call their bluff. Explain that you won't be taking the extra responsibility unless paid for it.

How does the pay compare to the market for the role?

Steakpeppersauceandchips · 21/07/2023 18:28

Thanks everyone, yes I I do think I will respectfully say I’m happy to stay in previous role in that case. Do think my 4 day week won’t be as attractive to potential employers but I can but try. It’s not even a certain amount of money that has bothered me so much it’s just that it’s no money, offer of a bonus or anything thats a bit hard to accept.

That’s crap.

After the financial crisis some of my colleagues agreed to a promotion without pay rise, but everyone was very open that they were doing it for the experience / CV so they could get another role.

But the employment market is so different now that this is unlikely to be a consideration. It’s just your employer taking the piss.

Like PP said, I’d call their bluff and ask to go back to your old role.

Bet they wouldn’t dare pull this shit with a FT man.

Beezknees · 21/07/2023 18:34

YANBU. I would not take on extra responsibility for no extra pay.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 21/07/2023 18:35

I think you need to tell him that you gave been very gracious in doing a role beyond what you are being paid for almost 9 months and that having check comparable salaries, can he please review the salary immediately or return you to your existing responsibilities?

Ask him if he really thinks that it will ve possible to recruit a replacement for you on the wage he is paying you now, together with the recruitment costs and training in period.

We all have a price. I will do X amount of work for Y amount of salary, but if someone wants me to do X plus 10% more work or responsibilities l need Y to increase too.

They are taking advantage of you. After 9 months, you have enough experience to get the same role elsewhere.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 21/07/2023 19:02

If you're worried about the 4 day week thing try Timely Careers who advertise flexible working. I live in NI and that is not the standard. I'd be looking elsewhere. You're only 40, what do you want to be when you grow up? If administrative work is for you, there are loads of options.

You’re right they wouldn’t do this on a man. Need to stand up for myself I think. Always too quick to give the benefit of the doubt.

Yes this is exact scenario has been running in my head and it’s only since coming home after work and having the space to think a bit more that I do realise that I can’t just accept the situation and carry on. Thank you

So to follow on from this post I have an interview tomorrow with a company that I have had on my radar for a while. I’m not unhappy where I am and as said above just discontented with the fact got a promotion but no payrise and it’s niggling me enough to apply atleast for something else.
Drawbacks of the job that have interview for are its a 40 min commute rather than 20 mins and no WFH which I have the option of now if needed but I don’t use much as would rather go to office. It worked well for me last week though as child was sick then I caught bug but was fit enough to work from home.
Know I should go even for the experience as very likely could come to nothing but now questioning even attending incase ridiculous as it sounds, they actually offer me it. I’d then be scared my currently employer would say fair enough on you go then 😂
I’d be happy now with say £2k extra where I am but had scheduled one to one last week with manager and through the grapevine have heard that there’s still no budging on salaries or the words that were used were making no promises which is basically another stalling technique.
So im answering my own question here but I’ve nothing to loose by going to interview, do I?

So as the original post was from last July I take it you took the promotion without any payrise? And now its coming up to appraisal time and word is no payrose again?
If so, leave. The salary you are earning if it is a senior role is low and you have already been promoted without a payrise. No chance on earth I'd take on a higher role for the same pay
