Hairdresser charging inconsistent with what was advertised

Back from the hairdressers today - went for a chop, nothing massively different from my current style and was out within the hour. I paid for a senior hairdresser which should have been £55.00 but my hair was cut by a stylist and charged at the price of £60.00 which is for new clients etc who go through a consultation.

In reality, my hair looks crap and I was overcharged. I think I am mostly frustrated that I didn't query it in person but I followed up on email and the response was:

"Thank you for your email. The Appointment was changed to a re style/ First appointment as the stylist gets longer for this service and you had not had your hair done for some time. We would recommend you book for a first appointment each visit, specially if you are leaving quite a few months in between appointments. If you book in 6-8 weeks then the normal appointment time for cut and blowdry will be enough."....

Does anyone here have a tactful approach to ensuring the person cutting their hair is a senior stylist, after all it's the reason why I initially paid 55.00 in the first place.

Wish there was more transparency when it comes to hairdressing prices - especially for women cuts. It's not okay that hairdressers change the charge without agreeing beforehand.

Lastly - if you live around Edinburgh / Glasgow and have recommendations I will gladly take them!

It sounds cheeky of them to charge more for people who don't go every 6-8 weeks to be honest and that alone would have me looking for a new salon.

I am absolutely finding a new salon... 👍🏼

The one I go to now doesn't do this, but I've had ones where they ask if you want conditioner on your hair and then charge more if you do. Conditioner used to be a standard part of a hair wash.

😂 Yep... it did! Reminds me of when Ryanair were apparently going to charge for use of loos on flight.... I've just found a hairdresser that has a really transparent page on costs - It's the principle that I think matters...

That would annoy me too, particularly if they hadn't told you before hand that it would be a different price as it's not like you can do anything about it once you've had it cut aside from complaining.

I also hate going anywhere new for a hair cut and not really knowing how much it will cost until the end and if any of the "oh do you want me to just spay/curl/straighten/whatever" will cost extra or if it is included in the price you're already paying as everywhere seems to do different things. It was only when I had my hair cut for the first time after leaving home that I realised you needed to specify if you wanted a wash/cut/blow as where I grew up you just booked "a cut" and you got it all (for a much cheaper price than I've paid anywhere else)

Did you know the name of the hairdresser that you wanted beforehand? If so you could say something like "Hi, you must be X, the Y, nice to meet you" which would give them the opportunity to correct you, or alternatively you could smile and say "last time I had my hair cut there was a mix up which I don't want to happen again, can I just check that you are the Y please?" before you commit to sitting down.

I'd be going back on the redo policy they advertise.
But, when I lived in Edinburgh, I used to go to Cheynes on South Bridge. The stylist left, though, and I've ended up with my sister's friend doing it for me at home.
Cheynes always seemed pretty good, though.

Whenever I have my hair done which is a colour and cut the amount charged is always different when I go up to pay. It gets on my nerves because I don’t feel like many salons are transparent about their fees. Usually I’ll check out the pricing on their website and I will query it if it seems way off the price I’d intended to pay.

This. Astoundingly so.

dutysuite · 21/07/2023 15:49

I remember years ago you could pay for a trim which is all my hair requires really as I only have 1-2 inches taken off and yet I’m charged for a full restyle cut!

Hey :) Thanks for the reply and for the tactful way to double check - Ill be doing this from now on. I've just found a hairdresser that is more transparent with the pricing so hopefully future surprises can be avoided.

It is frustrating right?! Thinking about consumer standards cannot think of anywhere else this happens (maybe Starbucks occasionally, but that's usually because they've given me a large...). Hate to split hairs on this but it's more just the principle about not being upfront and just assuming folk can pay whatever they ask.

That sounds like a really weird policy to me. I’ve never heard of charging an extra fee because you didn’t re-book within 6-8 weeks, wtf?!
I’ve had good experiences with Cheynes in the West End and on George Street. The last time I went for an appointment I tried a place in Portobello and it was good too.

BashfulClam · 22/07/2023 20:10

Depends where in Glasgow. I live a short train ride away and it’s £31 for a cut and blow dry.

Adoree · 22/07/2023 20:10

I go to somewhere that for what I have done states would cost me £70 online. She actually charges me £80 so I don't give a tip

Viral marketing campaign by Muse hairdressing?

I can assure you not - I'm just sharing what I think is helpful practice.

Yeah - that would put me off! I'm literally a trim kind of cut - not precious at all (my hair grows so quickly) - but I do loathe paying more than 50.00 for a cut...

£31.00 perfect!! I think it's finding the gems (sometimes out of the CBD) that are reliable for a consistent good cut! I'm between GLA and EDI so nice to have choices! I've got a few reco's DMd so think I've got some choices to go on :)
