To ask about your little rebellions?

I’m sitting here about to get changed for Zumba and I want to wear shorts but my legs aren’t shaved. I will be wearing shorts anyway. It’s a little rebellion, a tiny “up yours” to the man.

I have always found little ways to rebel (recovering people pleaser) that don’t actually hurt anyone so that I don’t have one massive rebellion and ruin my life one day!!

I also don’t share food, even with my kids, and am unapologetic about it. It’s now a family joke.

What little rebellions do you enjoy?

walking my dog round an estate near me, an old dear said "i dont know why you walk your dog round here"
yep, i make a habit of it even more so since then!

Justcallmebebes · 21/07/2023 19:38

I regularly do YouGov surveys, answer complete crap and pocket the £50

PhantomUnicorn · 21/07/2023 19:41

i refuse to sidestep when walking with my cane, if people are rude enough to actually walk into me, then i will loudly go "OUCH" and make them look like a twat.

Sensibletrousers · 21/07/2023 19:37

Bless you.

“The man” isn’t an actual man. It means the patriarchy.

“Up yours” = a saying that’s the verbal equivalent to sticking up your middle finger.

It’s figurative.

I have nothing to be accountable for.

Hi OP,

It doesn't really matter what form it takes. We create our actions, and we should take responsibility for them too. It is better for our mental health because then we have the recourse to redress them because we understand that we are in control of them.

TheNinny · 21/07/2023 19:44

I ignore all read receipts at work 😬

ArcticBells · 21/07/2023 19:57

bananabreadbatshit · 21/07/2023 09:57

Clicking "no" when someone asks for a read-receipt.

I do this too!

PhantomUnicorn · 21/07/2023 20:04

i can confirm though, as a previous checkout assistant for one of the big supermarkets, we don't care what bags you use or where they're from.. its not a rebellion, its just a reusable bag.

I love this!!

This is the best and most joyous one on the thread!

nopuppiesallowed · 21/07/2023 20:14

I hang my washing up gloves over the edge of the sink. My husband scrumples them up and jams them behind the tap. I pull them.out - and hang them over the edge of the sink. He....
We've been doing this act of rebellion since he retired.

Frazzlefrazle · 21/07/2023 20:22

Part of my job requires me to set up accounts or send letters. So if it is for a couple I'll always put the womens name first. I don't know why but it makes me happy to think that yes women are equal and just as capable so I'm going to address them first.

I use Aldi bags to pack my Sainsbury’s shopping.

Growing up my mom would put Aldi shopping in Waitrose and M&S bags so the neighbours wouldn’t know we shopped at Aldi 🙄

That reminds me of the time my mum once told me how to make it look like I had tights on when i didn't.

It’s a little rebellion, a tiny “up yours” to the man.

That isn’t a “rebellion”. That’s a “hey, look, I don’t take care of myself!”

Literally nobody cares if you shave your legs or not (except maybe potential partners). It just says a lot about you 🤷‍♀️

Don't be so ridiculous. Shaving legs is NOT taking care of yourself. It is entirely to appease the male gaze and strips the protective oil off your skin and leads to in growing hairs, cuts, razor burns. It is not more hygienic so don't try and dress it up as part of a self care routine. Men don't shave theirs in the main and nobody accuses them of not taking care of themselves.

It says nothing about the OP other than on that specific day she chose not to be weighed down by the expectation of patriarchy and the insidious enforcement of it by people like you.

Catusrusty · 21/07/2023 20:31

FlowersInTheSky · 21/07/2023 11:53

I don’t care if other people want to announce to the world they have no pride in their appearance 🤷‍♀️

Do you go round saying that to every man with hairy legs? Or are you just a woman hating hypocrite?

Caterina99 · 21/07/2023 20:35

DH has a doctorate. He likes to have dr as his title.

I deliberately put his title as Mr on anything I set up for him. If he wants dr he can fill it in himself!

PhantomUnicorn · 21/07/2023 20:37

@CatkinToadflax I LOVE that.. and actually just took inspiration.. and bought myself something i was never allowed as a child.

It just bought me a little moment of joy, and i can't wait for it to get here.

LilSebastiannn · 21/07/2023 20:37

I TRY not to smile at random people (more so men) out of awkwardness when I actually don’t feel like it but I’m not great at it!

If you've followed the patriarchal tradition of taking your husband's surname, it's a bit weird to object to other people following the same tradition.

Fair enough to object if you had kept your own name when you got married.

Er nowhere does it say this poster took her husbands name.

Reading it a third time, nowhere does it say she is even married.

AlyssumandHelianthus · 21/07/2023 20:45

If someone gives me a pass agg 'excuse me', I graciously tell them they're excused, or say why what have you done?

Echio · 21/07/2023 20:49

@Caterina99 I love this.

The whole Titles thing is bonkers. I've been involved in setting up customer database systems at a couple of places of work and I always make sure the Title section on our websites etc are optional.

I think using Dr outside of academic/work environment is almost always just being a plonker. And even within the work environment...

I worked in a gallery where the Curator and the Conservator both hold doctorates. The Conservator sometimes did work / advice for the general public with their own paintings. She instantly became 'Dr Thomas' with no hint of a first name on these occasions, while the Curator was always just 'Marie' no matter who or what she was doing when dealing with people.

I know who I have more respect for!

Haha I agree. Fair enough he uses Dr for work purposes as it’s relevant to his job. It’s not relevant to his tesco card

I've told my parents and my DCs school I work fulltime when I actually work part time, so they don't constantly call me for help.

2 days a week I'm back in my pyjamas and watching netflix at 9.30.

Why would the school call you for help?

Yemelade · 21/07/2023 21:07

An FU patriarchy one:
As a 6'1 woman that has shrunk myself down in an effort not to take up space, I have recently embraced womanspreading on public transport. If you're not familiar with this term, it's nothing rude. I just basically take up 2 seats on the bus and sit on the outside seat. I don't do it when there are clearly pregnant women or disabled/elderly people in need of a seat, but my bus route is primarily blue and white collar men who usually take up all the space whilst grunting and showing no regard for others, so I've adopted this too.

Have had occasions where they ask me to move over when I'm sitting on the aisle seat, or don't even say anything. They just look at me and nod at the seat. I now get out of my seat, typically tower over them, and do a hand gesture to the seat by the window and say something like "feel free to shimmy on past, but I'll be sitting here."

For what is effectively me offering them a seat, they do tend to react like I've just asked them to remove their penis. I think it's just such a subtle misuse of power that they don't know why they're mad either.

This one's kinda disgusting. But I have IBS and pretty terrible gas and wind at times. I used to keep it all trapped inside, and I'd be in agony not able to move most of the evening. So now I just pass gas wherever I am. If I'm in a shop, I "crop dust" and don't care if anyone hears. I have recently started to find it hilarious when strangers react to the smell though. Like realistically it isn't significantly impacting anyone around me and is supporting me in being pain free (plus it's just a normal bodily function) but it feels like I am a villain.

My recycling bin got stolen 2 years ago and my council charged me, and then wanted to charge me again after it was stolen again. So now I don't recycle.

If someone tells people off for not RTFT, I purposely post without RTFT.

how can you tell?

If I'm reading DD a book where all the animal characters are inexplicably male I change half of them to female.

They sent me a giraffe! She was too tall, I sent her back.

DD is one and doesn't have the faintest idea, of course, but it makes me feel better.

I do this too! I wrote to the editor to suggest that Dear Zoo could be changed (quoting Invisible Women) but she came back with an excuse an explanation that the repetition was necessary to help little kids with word recognition. 🤷
