To ask what your biggest jump in pay has been?

Currently work in the public sector and when I see some jobs in private sector that align closely with what I do, I’m astounded at the pay differential.

So, AIBU to ask what your biggest pay increase has been and how you went about it please?

There are so many benefits of working in the public sector (I’m currently a mid-senior level Civil Servant) including pension, flexible working etc, but am I missing a trick by sticking with a bang average salary when I could be earning double that elsewhere??

£16k to £45k (private)

£24k to 36k in 3 years (teaching)

£24k to 60k in 3 years (private sector)

FoodFann · 20/07/2023 16:06

First jump was supposed to say: 18months

Chesneyhawkes1 · 20/07/2023 16:08

My pay when training for my job was half the salary for when qualified.

I didn't think of tax though, so was quite disappointed when the take home didn't double 😂

Plonkydonkey · 20/07/2023 16:09

I went from £504 a month as a student nurse to £25k. Was nice well until the taxman took a wedge of it

Spiralout · 20/07/2023 16:12

I had a 33% pay rise in my last move, I work in a finance role but moved sectors from tourism to banking.

poorbuthappy · 20/07/2023 16:13

35% increase by changing jobs twice within 14 months.

jay55 · 20/07/2023 16:14

Went from 40k to 90k when I first started contracting but no paid time off or pensions etc.

Pea1985 · 20/07/2023 16:54

After being underpaid for most of my career so far - partly due to issues getting into the field (took a lower paid role to get experience) and then going on mat leave (screwed progression), I recently had a 20% increase and I'm now finally being paid the market rate for my role!

twinkie100 · 20/07/2023 17:12

I recently jumped 38% by moving companies (same sector, more senior position). My brother doubled his salary in 2021 by going from public sector to private - literally doubled.

I would say go for it. The money you could be making you could invest wisely into a private pension scheme - and lots of the private sector companies have great schemes too.

Mama678 · 20/07/2023 17:16

I moved from public to private sector with an £11k pay change

MegBusset · 20/07/2023 17:17

£13k (part time, £21k) to £27k (full time), in 2021. Felt like I’d won the lottery 😆

MegBusset · 20/07/2023 17:18

£21k FTE that should say!

I work in the charity sector. Pay is dire.

BettyRoodBoy · 20/07/2023 17:21

Public sector - 60% due to promotion, but coincided with me dropping to part-time so pay remained the same...

NEmama · 20/07/2023 17:43

Career change 50% increase

MamaDollyorJesus · 20/07/2023 18:03

Jumped £8k when i left a previous employer due to fraudulent furlough claiming for clients & a client offered me a job when they found out I was leaving. Left that job after a year because the MD (who I'd had no contact with previously) turned out to be a class A dickhead.

Jumped 7k last year when I handed my notice in & my current employer wanted to keep me - I didn't really want to leave to be fair but was offered a job 5 minutes away on same pay which meant I'd have more disposable income not spending £300 a month on commuting costs.

So since 2020 I've increased my income by £15k.

ThisIsACoolUserName · 20/07/2023 18:16

I've been promoted a couple of times in quick succession and my pay has gone from £50-70k in 6 months at the same organisation. But I've also had years where I get a 2% pay rise, so it varies.

DinnaeFashYersel · 20/07/2023 18:22

£30k increase by changing jobs

alwaysmovingforwards · 20/07/2023 18:28

Biggest jump was about +£75k on the total package.
Pension 15% company 15% me, plus unlimited AVCs.

BounceyB · 20/07/2023 18:32

In my early 20s I went from 20k to 30k by swapping an out of town law firm with a city firm - this was 25 years ago. It was good while it lasted. Now I work in education and while the pay is shit, the pension makes it just about worth it.

poorlyarm · 20/07/2023 19:59

59 to 82.

Littlegoth · 20/07/2023 20:02

Sideways move from my previous to current job, 29% increase. I was underpaid at my last organisation, and my current organisation pays well for my role.

FanFanFanFanYam · 20/07/2023 20:02

When I qualified my salary more than doubled - from £23,500 to £48,000, overnight.

Aubree17 · 20/07/2023 20:08

20500
Promoted. A few years back

verabarbleen · 20/07/2023 20:23

When I went on maternity leave I was on £8.10 an hour (5 years ago) and now I'm on 10.50 😂 it's rubbish but in a weird way I feel like it's massive . I remember my first job at 16 paid £4.50 an hour .

LoikeanOverner · 20/07/2023 20:43

I changed jobs many years ago and my pay went up 25%. I had to relocate a couple of hundred miles though. On a very positive note I met my future DH as he started there about a year after me.
