Would you share food with a stranger?

I met someone yesterday who wanted to share both a cake and a piece of fruit with me, there was no knife, she just wanted me to pick bits off for myself.
I had met her about 30 minutes prior to that. The gesture was kind and generous but I wasn't comfortable with that, I'd do if with a partner but not essentially a stranger. I politely declined, she seemed quite surprised and I guess it's more common in their culture (she wasn't from the UK). Would you do it?

She seemed nice but how can I know if people wash their hands and so on.

Why was she surprised? Had you previously said you were hungry?

No, I wouldn't eat the cake in that situation but I'd share a bunch of grapes or punnet of strawberries or something.

tulippa · 19/07/2023 22:59

No I wouldn't. I can get bit uncomfortable eating in public and with people I don't know though. Eg, I wouldn't eat if I was sat next to a stranger on a train.

I hadn't, and plus I'd been eating my own food prior to that. Yeah same, I don't like eating with people I don't know for some reason. I guess grapes or strawberries aren't as bad as it doesn't involve you touching the same thing.

It wouldn't have bothered me though most likely because I'd be to swept up in meeting someone new, I'd probably have broken off what was a reasonable piece and not gone back for more though.

I’d not want to ‘pick bits off’ with someone I did know tbh. I’d like to cut it, or at least break it in half if it was a dry slab type cake. otherwise they’d be picking bits off and putting it in their mouth then retouching the food to pick another bit off. I can’t stand double dipping either.

What piece of fruit was it? I’m just curious.

Story…not theory

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 19/07/2023 23:10

Who was she to you and where did you meet her just out of curiosity?

Rollerskate67 · 19/07/2023 23:14

It's a work related situation, don't want to give too much detail.
Eww that's a good point about touching their mouth then the food again.

No ones allowed to double dip hands in family bags of anything in this house! Put it in a bowl. Spit fingers are gross.

Yes I did today strangely enough. I went to watch a cricket game and there were not many people there. I took my Foster son and we had a nice picnic. Next to us sat 2 lads probably about 16 or 17. They said they had just finished school after doing GCSE's. Lunch time came and they looked across and watched us eating our picnic. One boy said that looks so nice. Foster son just said we have lots do you want some. They both said yes so they ate a nectarine, mini cheddars, and a few small ham sandwiches. I don't think they had much money because they were trying to work out how much a can would cost to share. I didn't have any cash on me or I'd have given them enough for a can each.

@caringcarer I’m sure they will remember that generosity for years.
