should be able to drink from my own tap?

I wont be here much longer but I'm trying hard not to wind myself up here. I have to run the tap for a bit first or the water will smell and taste bad. After that, the water is fine going into a clean cup, but leaves a taste in my mouth. It then goes bad in the cup after not long. Brushing my teeth also leaves a taste. It needs to be washed out after each use. Someone who lives in the area say they have the same thing but they got Scottish water to test their water and said it was fine. I got Scottish water to test mine and they said the same. In my case their test involved tasting it out of the tap, saying it was fine and then they left? I I've been buying a lot of water bottles to compensate, it costs me about £25-50 a week as I buy roughly 1-2 packs of 12 a day.

@empatheticpretzel nope Glasgow has soft water too. I do filter mine as I don't like the chlorine but my filter lasts ages compared to when I lived in a chalky part of the South East.

Are there bisons?

And is it the government?

Any upselling, or wine to pair?

Podgedodge · 19/07/2023 21:27

Weren’t you feeling ill yesterday OP? Maybe that’s affecting your taste.

mrsm43s · 19/07/2023 21:27

Have you made sure your ice machine has been thoroughly cleaned? It might be that which is tainting your water. Do be careful, though, it's likely the government's doing.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 19/07/2023 21:31

Ice machine! That was a very funny thread but the government got wind and the 'pouf' it was gone.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/07/2023 21:32

12 litres of Tesco own brand still bottled water is £2.50 - buying in bulk will bring the costs down, @empatheticpretzel.

Incidentally, I live near Glasgow, and haven’t had any problems with out tap water tasting bad.

elderflowerandpomelo · 19/07/2023 21:35

We have an in-line filter. Makes a massive difference to taste (that’s why we have it, not health).

don’t buy tiny bottles, please. They never degrade. If you feel you must buy plastic water, despite all the micro plastics it includes, then at least buy the mega bottles and decant…

Yellowlegobrick · 19/07/2023 21:38

Uk tap water is among the cleanest in the world. We've also got regulations requiring safety features like valves to prevent water contamination.

Possible causes:
Plumbing issue allowing backflow. How old are your white goods? There should be valves to prevent this.

Is your mains water pressure ok?

Some people notice & dislike a slight chlorine taste - sit a jug of water in the fridge a couple of hours and it will dissipate

JetBlackSteed · 19/07/2023 21:40

Get a glass jug and store the tap water in your fridge. Having it colder will make it taste better for you

GallaBru · 19/07/2023 21:42

How’s the ice ?

Breakoutbertha · 19/07/2023 21:44

Can people explain the ice? Is there something I'm missing? I'm totally confused.

yes and I'm still ill, but the water has been this way for months and months

If you're insisting that each member of the family usesntheir own 500ml bottle of water then that's a "you" problem.

I have sympathy for you noticing a taste in the perfectly fine Glasgow water as some people are super-tasters, but no excuse not to use a filter or the largest size bottle.

Aiden, the good for nothing manager that would never upsell anything and couldn't chose a red wine if it hit him in the face, was always complaining about the Bison.

The Bison in turn cooked up a plan with The Government to infect the ice compartments in fridges (I mean who would put an ice compartment in a fridge, an oven would obviously be better) so stay away from ice in ice compartments, and water from Glasgow and to be safe stay away from Bison and anyone called Aiden.

Crystal?

Waterford.

Nice. I'm more Darlington.

madeinmanc · 19/07/2023 22:08

Some people can smell and taste chlorine more than others, you may be one of the ones that can smell/taste it more. Try leaving a jug of the tap water out for a few hours to see if the taste improves.

Iamcloey · 19/07/2023 22:14

I used to live in Glasgow and I found when I'd move from England the water did taste different. I used to find it better to fill a jug and then leave it in the fridge. Something to do with chemicals evaporating I recall from when I looked it up at the time.
But I did eventually get used to it, different places the water does tend to taste different. But I'm glad that it's been tested though so you know it's safe

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/07/2023 22:18

I used to find the water disgusting when I lived in a soft water area - Oxford - after being brought up in a hard water area. Not sure if it’s that? It doesn’t taste properly fresh somehow.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/07/2023 19:20

Oxford has much harder water than Glasgow, in fact a quick google tells me it has some of the hardest water in the country.

FrivolousTreeDuck · 20/07/2023 19:23

Come to Yorkshire - our tap water is delicious.
