To think Social Media ruined 'If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything'

Or however the saying goes.
I see loads of lovely comments on people's posts etc online, this isn't suggesting that social media has stopped all kindness all together but rather that people take the option to comment not so much as an option, but a command. Whenever I'm on Tik Tok, Twitter, anything I constantly see that the majority of comments are negative, rude, sarcastic or downright nasty. I was bought up that if you have nothing nice to say not to say anything at all. I am renovating somewhere at the moment and I use tik tok for home renovation ideas. I follow a lovely single mum doing a reno on a budget and the comments all over a recent video were so foul, from the colour of paint she chose ( she already specified to stay on budget it was given to her ), to the technique she used to paint etc. I'm sure nobody is like this in real life? Has social media made this normal? If it was a one off it wouldn't be so bad but there's LOADS of people like this and it goes on on hair dressers videos, even bride to be videos. I can't see the benefit at all in it and it scares me that society today are going to think this is normal?

You’re right, it’s horrible

Social media has definitely made people "brave". We all know the vast majority of people making these comments online would never say them face to face. This was the reason I quit social media a few years ago and have never regretted it. Even our local village page on Facebook would have the negative, bitchy comments. I have noticed a lot of people doing the same and either quitting or dramatically reducing their social media presence.

So agree regarding Facebook, I got rid of it about 10 years ago and never ever missed it. What is the solution? In a way I suppose the freedom of speech calls people out more, on maybe two occasions ( not a lot ) I've seen friends post stuff online by chance that I've thought wtf at and it's made me more aware of their character ( not to judge but one was a really vicious spat with a self employed beautician about her services ), but then that freedom allows so much unkindness to be published for the world to see and is curbing people's creativity / zest for life. I don't post about my renovation myself in fear of it, can't imagine doing something I'm proud of for the world to see and having hundreds of hateful comments after.
