Refunds on trains cancelled due to train strikes

Apologies cannot find any information and The Trainline says £0 refund for two tickets.

Bought a return ages ago and by the time the strike timetable came out it was too late to buy or change the outgoing ticket on a non-strike day. The return train is cancelled on tomorrow. Do you automatically get your money back for a cancelled train?

I don’t know to be honest, but sometimes I’ve had luck getting a refund from the train operator directly vs the booking platform. Trainline has their own rules on refunds

Thanks. I won't ever buy a return again as from reading the information it looks like if one leg of the journey has a cancelled train you have to cancel the whole return and rebook but this was not an option as the tickets for the non-cancelled train were too expensive due to late notice of strike timetable.

I write to the customer service department and plead my case. You might have to pay a fee but if you bought directly from the train operator you have a good chance of getting (most of) it back.

Ah just saw it was Trainline. In that case, no, not a cat in hells chance.

Information on the trainline website says that if one leg is cancelled then you can use the ticket on specific days either side of the strike day or choose not to travel and get a refund for both journeys as long as you request the refund no later than 6pm the day before your journey is due to start. If you go to “my tickets” and then “view journey” and look at the affected leg (outbound or inbound, whichever applies) you’ll see a yellow triangle flagging that there may be disruptions. Select the arrow beside it and scroll down and you’ll see the refund information. Putting “trainline refund for strikes?” Into Google will also link you to this information.

Trainline is dreadful. They charge extra to sell you tickets. Save yourself some money and go to the train operator direct.

With this I think you should still be refunded by the operating company under Delay Repay. Check their website

Last year I arrived at Kings Cross to discover my train had been cancelled. I went to the ticket office and was rebooked, free of charge, on a later train. I received an automatic refund for the cancelled train while I was travelling on the later train.

This is why I would never use the cowboys at Trainline. Best to go direct to the operator.

I never use Trainline, make it your last time, book in future with the train operator. You might get agreement to move to another day or a credit for a future ticket purchase.

I got an automatic refund from Trainline when my train got cancelled
