To be devastated at this

I currently have the most amazing horse imaginable. He has helped me through some of the most awful times in my life and he is my best friend. Unfortunately for personal reasons I have to sell him and he is moving to his new home this week. To say I’m devastated is an understatement. I know in my heart that it’s the right thing but I’m also heartbroken and will miss him so much. His new home is absolutely fabulous and I know he will be happy there. But I’m saying goodbye to my best friend and I’m lieing here at 3am falling to pieces even thinking about it. Sorry not really an AIBU I’m just in pieces here and absolutely devastated about it all

Hi @Bubblesinthewind i'm so sorry you have had to sell your horse. I totally hear you, it's like losing someone. Our cat passed away a few months ago and honestly the heartache is so bad. Take each day as it comes, time is a healer xx

Catsmere · 19/07/2023 03:28

I'm so sorry, OP, that's awful.

IneedcoffeeinanIV · 19/07/2023 03:40

I'm so sorry OP ❤️

SapphireSeptember · 19/07/2023 04:11

Who the hell voted YABU? Show yourselves!

I'm sorry OP, that sucks. Flowers It's a loss, and you're grieving, be kind to yourself. ❤️

BettySpencer2023 · 19/07/2023 04:37

Sorry to hear OP. I absolutely love animals but cannot bring myself to get anymore because the pain of missing them is just too much. I hope you are able to visit him occasionally. I wish you both all the best.

PuddlesPityParty · 19/07/2023 05:47

So sorry OP I can only imagine how upsetting this will be 💖 you’re doing the best thing for your horse though, and you’ll have given them a great life so far! Hopefully whoever they go to is willing to keep you updated so you know they’re thriving xx

Oh @Bubblesinthewind you are absolutely NBU! I had to sell my amazing pony when I went to uni and I still think about it at times 3 decades later. I spent so much time with her and she knew all my teenage angst! She went to a really lovely home and I know she was well looked after.

Voerendaal · 19/07/2023 06:22

I am so sorry OP. Horses are such a massive commitment in time money and emotions. I totally get it . But you have obviously done the best thing for him and you have also given him a good life. The hard line is that horses are too expensive to keep if you don’t have thd income and/or time to give. Take care and take your time. When I lost my old horse it was a massive shock - I grieved not only the horse but actually the getting up and looking after and the social side that went with it. YANBU. ❤️

3luckystars · 19/07/2023 06:29

I’m really sorry. Being an adult is very hard sometimes. As long as the horse is happy, you are doing the right thing.
write down a pro cons list, or a list of reasons so that you can keep it and refer back to it in the future when you get upset about it and doubt yourself.

all the best

That is so sad. Could you change it to a long term loan? Can you go and see your horse every so often?

VeganStar · 19/07/2023 06:54

I’m really really sorry that you’ve had to say goodbye to your lovely horse.
our animals are so much more than pets these days. We let them into our homes and they take over our hearts then they quickly become part of the family.
when we have to let them go or they pass away it’s like our hearts are ripped out.
is there any way you can visit your horse. It may be too heartbreaking at the moment because you are grieving very deeply but later on you might want to.
I hope you find a little bit of peace in the knowledge that you did your very best for him op and he will be happy in his new home.
cant really give any advice but know that all of us on mumsnet are thinking of you 🩷

We had to rehome our dog. This was many years ago. We just weren't home enough and he had gotten lonely and unbelievably destructive. He was still a puppy and I had contacted the breeder to say that I didn't want my money back or anything but could she rehome him with a family with people around while he was still a cute young puppy. My husband took me out to lunch to try to cheer me up and I cried during the lunch and the waiter kept giving my husband evil looks because he obviously thought I was being dumped. Luckily, my mother stepped up and took the puppy on. She was retired and had other dogs and more land suitable for roaming about on. He had the most wonderful life with her - she blowdried him after baths. I wish the same for your horse - without the blowdrying.

Georgeandzippyzoo · 19/07/2023 07:08

Never owned a horse buf had a discussion with a lady who used to, at the weekend, after reading about selling a horse on when they were no longer large enough (not saying this is your reason).
This had never crossed my mind, that you would have to sell your beloved pet on and my friend said that was her 'rule' that you didn't buy one without knowing you would be able to/have to sell them on.

It must be sbsolutely devastating, regardless of how great their next home is. I know horses are very calm, empathic animals (I know many fc who go riding due to this emotional link) and I can see how strong your connection to them must be.
Acknowledge that this is grief you are dealing with. I wish there was a way to make you feel better but you ANBU x x

Pegsmum · 19/07/2023 07:09

I totally understand, it is heartbreaking. Is he going far or can you visit him? One of mine went on permanent loan a couple of hours away, I went to visit when he’d settled in and he totally ignored me!! I was expecting an emotional reunion but it was as though I was a complete stranger!!
if his new home is fabulous you know he’ll be fine but it does really tear you apart to say goodbye, I’ll be thinking of you.

Triflenot · 19/07/2023 07:40

I’m so sorry OP. Take care of yourself x

Nothing to add, except one of these x

Bubblesinthewind · 19/07/2023 19:24

Thanks so much everyone. I would love to have put him out on full loan so I could keep him but it was easier just to sell as ultimately that’s what I’ll have to do in the future anyway. As ridiculous as it probably sounds I’ve never felt so upset, I’m going to miss him so much, I know he’ll bring so much joy to his next owner but it still hurts so much x
