Amazon sent me a box of broken glass - they were not sorry that I cut my finger!

Four large Kilner jars (each taped up in thin bubblewrap) rattling around an oversized box, in smithereens! I cut my finger picking one out! Amazon is no longer easy to get through to on the phone - it involves hunting for a number and then having nonsensical exchanges with an automated 'interactive' voice system (while your dinner burns) before eventually getting through to a human. Am I right to think that they were unreasonable not to offer any compensation (despite my injury and the fact that I was being left to dispose of the large box full of bubble-wrapped broken glass)? When I suggested some sort of recompense, they offered a £5 Amazon promo (whatever that is)!
I already felt bad about the ethics of using Amazon...but it is often too tempting because I don't have accessible shops or decent public transport any more. However, I think these sorts of experiences are tipping the balance in favour of shopping elsewhere...or doing without! My cut finger probably serves me right for giving them my custom in the first place!

Could you tell from the noises that it was broken before you opened it? Why did you take one out??

DustyLee123 · 18/07/2023 21:33

A colleague got help by going down to the local distribution centre.

Have they offered to replace the broken kilner jars as well. I think a £5 voucher is reasonable for a cut finger and I would hardly consider wrapping the the broken glass up and putting it in bin an ordeal.

I assume they've issued a full refund? I am not sure what sort of compensation you are after beyond that? I know that here I can return a product and they'll pick it up so you can request a pick up return and make it their problem for disposal.
Otherwise I appreciate the cut finger is annoying but I am not sure I'd expect much more than a £5 voucher. Generally the thing with Amazon is that the return process is v good but it's not a high service retailer so you won't get a lot more than the automated setting. That's why the prices are so low! Sorry

They were wrapped quite tightly - it was only when I picked up one that it sort of collapsed in on itself - I had stupidly thought the jangling noise might be a loose metal fastener! Amazon also then required me to send them a photo - so I had to cut open the bubble-wrap (shattered glass everywhere!).

They said I could not post it back to them (presumably because it was basically a box full of broken glass!).

Did they issue a refund?

steff13 · 18/07/2023 21:42

Also, I know hindsight is 20/20, but why wouldn't you open it over the box so glass didn't go everywhere?

nevynevster · 19/07/2023 06:39

Go through the automated system and request a refund that way and it will allow you to create a post label! If you really want to.
In that case I'd agree that maybe a wee bit more for the hassle of having to empty the box (although where I live it's mixed recycling so glass and cardboard go together anyway!)
