111 emergency dentist..

When did they stop giving out appointments?

My NHS dentist passed away and I can’t find another one at all. I also don’t have hundreds of pounds to spare to continuously pay private.

Woke up yesterday with a tooth ache that’s continuously getting worse. I rang 111 today to get an appointment (Iv done this before years ago and they gave me an appointment at a random dentist).

This time they basically said they had no appointments and just said ring around dentists to get a space. Which is ridiculous advice considering Iv already rang around a load and can’t find a NHS one and most are not taking on new patients full stop either.

Has anyone else called 111 recently and been told the same thing?

I rang them 2 weeks ago with pain. I said the pain on a scale of 1-10 was 15. I wasn't joking. Agony, raging infection and swollen face. I rang Sunday morning and appointment was given Monday at 7pm. Told them I had no dentist at all which is true. They even rang me Monday lunch to ask me to come at 4pm. I think you need to really milk it with the pain. Toothache is horrible. Hope you get seen. I had the tooth removed but they wanted to refer me to surgery as it had a curved root. I couldn't wait and dentist did manage to get it out there and then. It's only just finishing healing now.

savoycabbage · 19/07/2023 14:26

I started having toothache in January and my NHS dentist wouldn't see me. The pain started getting worse and worse and I called 111 who told me to see my dentist within 24 hours...

They still wouldn't see me.

I went to A&E...they told me to go to my dentist.

Foolishly I just kept thinking "well, they will see me now" every time. I wish now I'd just gone to a private dentist straight away.

I ended up having to go private. £60 for the initial appointment and £600 for a root canal.

Justmyviews · 19/07/2023 15:44

Maybe if people went to the dentist for regular check ups they wouldn't have so many issues when it comes to see a dentist in an emergency.

Better still how about look after your teeth sufficiently.

You're pathetic. Always that one Bitch on every thread.

@Jimminir

Hardly, if you actually had a clue about dentistry you would understand that the majority of patient complaints are due to poor diet and poor oral health.

Breakoutbertha · 19/07/2023 15:57

OP you can get an emergency dentist but you will have to pay. Between £70 and £120.

That’s pretty obvious but even people that do go to the dentist regularly have problems sometimes.

You came on the thread and didn’t have a nice thing to say, just being a bitch. It says a lot about you. Pathetic.

Like so any thing it depends on area. Where we are (part of London), if you call 111 after 6pm they can book you into an emergency dentist at a community hospital.
This is not well advertised (deliberately I'm sure) and I only know because I work in the same community hospital

ClareBlue · 19/07/2023 16:00

@Justmyviews yiu haven't a clue how well the OP looks after their health so it's a shit comment that adds absolutely nothing. Plenty of people have genetic predisposition to dental issues. And the issue is about accessing services.
And our universal healthcare system treats all conditions irrespective of life style choices, without judgement.

Toothiepegg · 19/07/2023 16:00

@Justmyviews

give over, you are being ridiculous.

Jigslaw · 19/07/2023 16:01

Not sure why you're getting so defensive at the truth OP, your old dentist isn't the only one in the country, and regular check ups do often prevent things escalating into emergencies. Not helpful for you to hear but also not false. Have you phoned around local dentists to be seen as a private patient? 111 can get you an appointment for the access centre but only it's an actual dental emergency rather than I haven't looked for another dentist yet.

You honestly don’t have a clue.
Of course Iv looked for another bloody dentist and I haven’t been able to find one. Hence not having one.

Like I said there’s always one unhelpful Twat on a thread… congratulations.

And what genetic predisposed issues would they be?

Posts like that from @Justmyviews are really unpleasant and not in any way constructive.

Don't get upset @Jimminir .

I am lucky enough to have an NHS dentist but at my last 6 monthly check up they told me that the check up timescale is now 9 months.

I hope you get to see a dentist soon.

I used to work for 111 and the dental bit is a nightmare they can no longer just make appointments like they used too - was on contract and not anymore so unless your at risk from the swelling etc it is just give you some numbers local to you to try - occasionally depending where you live they have emergency dentists they can get you in with or a number to call (in hours) out of hours (weekends and 6pm to 8am) you may have more luck they should have a dental nurse on every shift but its not always the case - system needs changing its frustrating for the patient as well as painful and for the call handler coz they do actually want to help but their hands are tied by contracts and red tape

For goodness sake stop. The country is full of people, including children, who can't access an NHS dentist.

So it has officially changed…
They didn’t even give me any numbers although Iv rang most of them I’m the area.

No NHS dentists within 50 miles of me taking on new patients. Just had an abscess- cost me £90 for an emergency dentist appt, £16 for the first lot of antibiotics, £40 for the second lot of antibiotics from the prescribing pharmacist as the first lot didn’t work- both private prescriptions- then £280 to have it removed. And it’ll be another £2500 at least for an implant to replace it!
