Thickened womb lining 2 months Postpartum

Hi all,

Posting this here as I'm a little bit anxious and in need of some reassurance.

I am 2 months PP and have been experiencing cramping without any period for the last few weeks. As a result my GP referred me for an ultrasound scan which I had today. During the scan the sonographer said everything looked fine but I had a slightly thickened womb lining but that it was likely due to only just given birth and explained I should be expecting a heavy period.

I come out happy but since then I have googled thickened womb lining and all I can see is cancer!

Has anyone had anything similar to myself postnatal and it all been fine? Or should I be expecting a biopsy referral from my GP? I'm only 29 and I'm now scared shitless ☹️

I’m waiting on an ultrasound so I don’t have much experience currently.

Maybe it’s worth asking your GP once you have a period do you need an ultrasound again? Have they done bloods? White cell counts tend to indicate cancers / infections etc. Maybe it’s worth asking for some basic blood tests too if they haven’t been done already.

Womb cancer is incredibly rare in younger women. It's even pretty rare in women pre menopause. I'm 46 and just been round this loop with a womb lining that's the equivalent of a winter weight duvet rather than the Egyptian cotton sheet it should be. The most common symptom btw is bleeding which you don't have.
The good news from your scan is you've not got any bits of placenta left behind.
Ask for a gp appointment to discuss but I suspect they will want to wait it out until you get your period. Which will be a bloodbath btw. Then they could look again and see if the lining has normalised. Try not to google, thickened lining post menopause is bad news and a measurement like mine would defo be v bad news then but it's a totally different situation pre meno whilst womb is still in use as it were. Everything you saw online will be post meno stuff.

Completely normal postnatally. As Pp said they would have been looking for retained products, but usually you would have had bleeding if you’d had any anyway. It takes a lot longer than you think for everything to settle down.

Not post partum but I was on regular repeat scans for ovarian cyst monitoring and on one occasion I was 10 weeks post coil removal but hadn't had a period and my uterus lining was really thick. I had the heaviest period of my life and at the next scan all was normal again.

I think the sonographers assessment is probably correct.

heldinadream · 18/07/2023 12:34

Thickened womb lining is literally why women menstruate OP. The lining thickens in preparation for a potential baby and if there's no conception it sheds - this is your period. Then thickens again. That's why she said to expect a period. All sounds totally normal.

Maybaby1994 · 18/07/2023 12:40

Thanks so much for all of your replies! Yes she did say it was probably normal for someone who'd just had a baby and not had their first period yet, but I stupidly googled and of course the first things that came through was full of the dreaded C word!

Going to have a quiet word with myself and try and prepare for this awful period 😂 thanks again ☺️

Thickened womb lining is literally why women menstruate OP.

There is a normal range for thickness of the uterus lining at different stages of the menstrual cycle when the thickness exceeds the upper limit it may be indicative of uterine cancer.

OP's lining seems to have exceeded the upper limit which is why she is worried. If it helps OP mine measured 27mm at one point (normal upper limit approx 16-18mm) but returned to normal after the heavy period.

heldinadream · 18/07/2023 12:55

There is a normal range for thickness of the uterus lining at different stages of the menstrual cycle when the thickness exceeds the upper limit it maybe indicative of uterine cancer. But the sonographer took no further action and tried to reassure OP, so I think it's reasonably safe to assume that it was not excessive. Not that I'm saying the NHS and all it's operatives are perfect and never make mistakes, just I can't see anything to worry about here.
If you're still worried OP, you need to ask them for clarification.

skyofdiamonds · 18/07/2023 13:06

Nothing to worry about. Totally normal, just as the sonographer said it you. Slightly thickened is just fine and you’re very likely going to have a period soon.

heldinadream · 18/07/2023 13:10

And congratulations on your baby OP! It's a vulnerable time and it's so easy to get worried about things. Take care of yourself, won't you? 😊

Maybaby1994 · 18/07/2023 15:46

Thanks everyone!

Just an update of sorts, doctors called me to go over the scan and said that everything was normal and my endometrium measured at 14mm, which is what I'm assuming the sonographer said was slightly thick. They said nothing further was needed so I'm assuming that measurement is ok?

OP posts:
satellitesunshine · 18/07/2023 15:48

yes that’s normal

Maybaby1994 · 18/07/2023 17:57

Okay so I have literally just come on and reading online it says that during day one of menstruation it should be 1-4mm in thickness, but my scan said I was 14mm. Is this something I should be going back to my GP about or am I reading it wrong? Should it be 1-4mm after menstruation? I'm confused now and very anxious if that's correct

OP posts:
fuckmyuteruslining · 18/07/2023 18:08

Your endometrium isn't going to be normal just now, you had a baby and you haven't resumed a normal cycle yet. 5mm is what's often quoted but in pre menopause I've read up to 17 is totally normal.
You are ok op.

CupEmpty · 21/07/2023 12:40

@Maybaby1994 day 1 of menstruation means the day you start your period. Ie when the thick lining starts to shed away (a normal period). As far as I can tell from your post, the scan wasn’t done on the first day of your period? So the lining will be thicker at different points in your cycle. This is normal. 14mm is normal. With all due respect, you’re getting yourself in a pickle. It’s normal. Forget it.

Maybaby1994 · 21/07/2023 12:45

@CupEmpty yes that's right, I had my scan done on the Monday and then started my period that same day, around 2 hours later or so. That is why I was querying it?

I have similar @Maybaby1994 how did this turn out? Also 29!

Maybaby1994 · 04/09/2024 14:53

Hi @Nomoreplease2016
I ended up speaking to my GP about it at the time and they wasn’t concerned, they said because my period came around 2/3 hours later it was due to that!
