What do you do when you get petrol?

Not an AIBU, I know.

I was at the petrol station yesterday and someone filled up her car and went to pay leaving a baby who looked about 2 months old asleep in the car alone.
An old woman(why is it always old women) complained to the manager.
His response was "each to ones own".

I dont drive but I am having lessons and have just bought a car and I'm now wondering what I would do.

What do you do? or what would you do?

This has been done many times on here. Can't see the problem of leaving the kids in the car myself - what harm can come to them?

LaDiDaDi · 25/02/2008 18:45

I always dd in the car, have done since she was tiny.

kayzisbroody · 25/02/2008 18:45

Thats why I thought. I didnt see a problem until this woman pointed it out.
BTW it is a very small petrol station only 4 pumps so you can see all the cars from the shop.

Sorry I hadnt realised it had been done before.

loopylou6 · 25/02/2008 18:46

dont see the harm in quickly running into a petrol station if u lock the car up

fruitymum · 25/02/2008 18:46

I leave DD in the car - lock doors when i go to pay.

TheFallenMadonna · 25/02/2008 18:46

I either 'pay at the pump' or leave them in the car.

My mum always left us in the car and thats what I'll probably do with ds.

Leave her in the car with doors locked. Same as when going to get a ticket for parking.

tiredAli · 25/02/2008 18:50

I remember this causing me a dilemma when I first had ds, it seemed wrong to leave him in the car, yet I couldn't face lugging him out and struggling to pay with a little baby in my arms (or struggling with the car seat). I eventually reasoned that he would be perfectly safe in a locked car where I could see him at all times and was never more than 10 seconds away. Have left him in the car ever since.

McDreamy · 25/02/2008 18:53

I have always left them in the car with the doors locked. IMO safer than crossing a garage forecourt with 2 children in tow.

Why on earth did she complain to the manager? What was she expecting the manager to do? Bar her from using the petrol station? Nowt as strange as folk!!

hertsnessex · 25/02/2008 18:54

i leave min in the car. i lock the doors, and keep an eye out, its not like you are doing a superemarket shop!

kayzisbroody · 25/02/2008 18:55

I have no idea McDreamy.

Whilst in my PFB phase I would only do pay at pump or leave it for DH to fill up. Where I live now there are always pump attendants - far more civilised!

yetihed · 25/02/2008 18:56

If my DS is asleep, I leave him in the car with doors locked (and keep neurotically looking over my shoulder/ out of the window!). If he's awake, I take him in as I know he'll cry when he realises I'm not there.

Emprexia · 25/02/2008 19:00

I always try to use my local Tesco garage which has a huge picture window and you can always see the car, so i leave DS in the car.. its safer than carrying him across a busy forecourt if you ask me.

If i use the local Texaco or BP, i take him into pay with me because i can't see the car from the shop.

Flllightattendant · 25/02/2008 19:03

I left my four year old and baby outside a shop for 5 minutes once and double locked the car, the four year old climbed out the window and came to find me

I hate these dilemmas.

wildfish · 25/02/2008 19:03

I used to take DS with me to pay or pay at the pump. Reason, simple there have been cases of people stealing cars at the pump (even one where a kid was in the back!). Granted I've never seen such a thing happen, I figured better safe than sorry. Now DS is older, he always comes out to help fill up even in the freezing rain arrrrggggghhh!

kayzisbroody · 25/02/2008 19:08

FA, I did that once.

Its a real hard one, do you wake up a sleeping baby and/or older kids and walk them around a petrol forecourt or do you leave them and risk as Wildfish says risk someone stealing your car and dc's?

moodymammy · 25/02/2008 19:08

I use pay at pump, i would never leave my 4 month ds in the car on his own for a second.(well apart from when i am actually filling the tank! but i am right outside the door )

needmorecoffee · 25/02/2008 19:10

I used to heave dd out, put her over one shoulder and go in and pay. Now I have to undo her wheelchair and ramp her out and then ramp her back in again. No way would I leave a child in a car.

kayzisbroody · 25/02/2008 19:12

I think that once I pass I'll always try to get petrol where I can pay at the pump when Im alone.

OP posts:
wordgirl · 25/02/2008 19:15

Until I discovered Mumsnet it had never crossed my mind that anyone would ever take their baby/child out of their car to pay for petrol. I have always just left mine in the car and never even thought twice about it.

kayzisbroody · 25/02/2008 19:17

I didnt think anything of it until this woman said it yesterday.
