To think £100 per hour for online counseling is steep?

Just that really.
I was shocked when she told me the cost as in the recent past I’ve paid £50 for talking therapy and £65 for EMDR.
It’s just talking therapy. AIBU?
Im in the NE if that’s relevant.

Hell yes that's pricey!

I pay £80 and it's very very expensive but cheaper than not being able to work.

stevalnamechanger · 17/07/2023 23:54

Steep . I found someone for 65 today

Glad it’s not just me! It’s online too.

Thanks for replying and yes I agree it’s a pay-off for being able to function properly isn’t it.

Definitely steep. Think I’m going to have to turn her down despite liking her offerings.

No nhs options? Where I live there are a lot of counselling places, bit of a waiting list of course. X

stevalnamechanger · 18/07/2023 00:01

I would just send a message saying she's over your budget of x can she recommend anyone more suitable . May offer discount

Hawkins0001 · 18/07/2023 00:02

Considering those prices, I'm glad I talk to the mirror

Imnotdrinkingmerlot · 18/07/2023 00:03

I think it depends on their qualifications. For an online counsellor, I agree that's expensive. For a clinical Psychologist, about average for NE.

Counsellor is not a protected term - anyone can use it - so I would ask what their level of experience and qualification is.

Hairdressers/ tradespeople often charge more than this per hour. More money def doesn't guarantee a better therapist, which is a problem, but paying for experience and skill is what you do with most professions.

Maybe I should try my gp. Could be worth asking, I’m just a bit desperate atm to get some trauma dealt with x

The joy of online is you can look beyond your immediate area. Check out bacp or similar and search by specialty or cost.

atthebottomofthehill · 18/07/2023 00:09

Echo the PP that says it's entirely dependent on the person's qualifications.

Counsellor - £100 is expensive
Clinical psychologist - £100 is cheap

£65 for EMDR was a bargain

Startyabastard · 18/07/2023 00:11

Are you sure that it's not psyoanalysis rather than standard 'counselling'.
I think it's very expensive for counselling.

Just checked again and yes she is a psychologist so yes I see what you’re saying. Thank you for pointing this out. Didn’t realize the difference.

I think that's very high. Some of a therapist's fee covers room hire, usually £15 - £20 an hour, so online should be cheaper if they're working from home. They might be a very experienced or highly qualified therapist, though

She calls herself a ‘counselor psychologist’ so bit confusing but on reflection I see the difference now. Thanks all x

"Counsellor psychologist" is not a protected title.

Be careful. Look at the person's qualifications. She should be registered with the HCPC if she is offering a clinical service to the public.

LotsOfThingsToThinkAbout · 18/07/2023 00:16

You still need to check what type of psychologist and what there qualifications are. It's not a protected term.

"Unlike in many other countries, the title 'psychologist' is not protected within UK law. This means that anyone can call themselves a 'psychologist'. However, the general public tends to assume a certain level of training and qualification from this term"

Pretty much, sometimes you go circler with logic, but it helps thinking of different strategies etc, then it's trying to consider likely options.

Overall it helps talking out loud, vs in your mind.

Hawkins0001 · 18/07/2023 00:18

And for all, yes I'm strange and proud

whateveryouwantmetosay · 18/07/2023 00:18

What are the qualifications of the therapist? That's really what you're paying for.

How did you come across her, personal recommendation or an ad/online listing?

I've recommended my chiropractor to many people over the years, he charges more than market rate, but is seriously brilliant. I first saw him about 30 years ago, go back every three to five years, & I think he's resolved every issue in a single visit.
By contrast, I saw someone else in lockdown, 3 visits, not much improvement, & they were suggesting a discount on a course of ten visits.

I know it's a different discipline, but if the person came with a strong personal recommendation, I'd consider paying more.
