To not have filled in the full job application form?

beeonmybonnett · 17/07/2023 23:43

Just applied for a position online. It asked me to attach my CV at the very beginning, and so I did.

Then it asked me to manually fill out all my qualifications and previous employment details.

i guess I’m just lazy, but really is it necessary to ask someone to fill all of that out when they’ve just attached their CV which contains the same information?

Honestly, it makes no sense. It will be interesting to see if they offer me an interview.

No it's not necessary it's a bloody waste of time. However you're unlikely to get an interview because you've shown them that you're unable to follow basic instructions 🤷‍♀️

LaughterTitsoff · 17/07/2023 23:48

I seriously doubt they'll call you for interview if you haven't followed the instructions.

I do agree it's a waste of time though.

Lavender14 · 17/07/2023 23:51

I'm assuming they want you to fill in the application form so they can quickly read it in order to shortlist for interview and see at a glance who meets their criteria. And then read your cv to get a fuller picture to develop productive interview questions and find out more about you as a candidate. So yabu if you want the job.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/07/2023 23:52

YABU if you want the job, as they will have done the form like that because they want it filled in that way.

They won’t be impressed by someone not doing it, and thinking they can just cut that corner. It makes you sound not really serious about the job or unable to follow basic instructions.

Brokendaughter · 17/07/2023 23:55

If I was your potential employer, the fact you can't follow a really simple instruction when you are presumably on your best behaviour, would leave your application in the recycle bin.

If I am paying an employee, I want to be able to trust them to do the tasks I employed them for, even if one of them is filling out a stupid form.
I don't want the person who skips easy steps which could leave me with a problem because they feel it's wasting their time.

I expect they do a first sift just on the computer form to weed out the people who aren't qualified or have requested experience, then only bother to look at the CVs of people who pass that first sift.

But you do you.

Could you not have just copied and pasted?

No. It asks for each qualification and their details in one individual group of boxes

I work in the space - you may get away with it .

Many people do .

Also nobody really cares about seeing people follow simple instructions when you're applying for a large company - all I care about is if the CV is aligned . Not if you've played some stupid dance with the ATS

Thatladdo · 18/07/2023 00:10

Youve already demonstrated your unable to follow instructions and being difficult before even getting an interview. You dont know that the same person will be looking at the two things or that they will stay together.
You expect someone else to do the work of filling it in when its you who is asking for a job.
Bad impression

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 18/07/2023 00:11

I suspect the reason is that people appear to be shit at writing CVs and the roles where I've tried filling by asking for CVs I get 300 applications, 95% of which I reject because the CV is either 11 pages of the minutia of every job they've ever done in the last 20 years or 1 page that's so high level I have no idea what relevant experience they have after reading it.

By setting application questions you can direct people to provide the information you need to decide if they have the relevant skills and experience.

Shep21 · 18/07/2023 11:28

I read a lot of applications in my job - the application form is so important. If you fail to fill in fully or correctly it’s an instant put off. It helps us to scan through applicants to assess suitability. CVS can often be cluttered & filled with irrelevant information. If we can get a good snapshot, and see the applicant is a good fit, the CV will then be read.

chickabilla · 18/07/2023 11:35

We shortlist via the application form then only get access to CVs for candidates after shortlisting.

Anamechangeisnotjustforchristmas · 18/07/2023 11:41

Some companies require hiring managers to read application forms and not CVs, as they can be anonymised more easily, to protect the company from accusations of discrimination. YVBU.

I mean, you're right, but we have to jump through hoops if we want a job. You've got to play the game, even when the rules suck.
