To not buy teacher a gift?

Squiggo · 17/07/2023 20:35

Would IBU not to but DC’s teacher an end of term gift because tbh the teacher has been crap? None of DC’s SEN adaptations are being implemented and attainment has fallen behind, my child is regularly refusing to attend school and I feel totally frustrated and let down by the teacher. Teacher promised lots of things and isn’t doing them.

is it the ultimate smite or am I just being petty?

A gift for a teacher is definitely not compulsory - even if the teacher’s been great!

ConnieTucker · 17/07/2023 20:37

You dont need a reason. Just dont buy one.

Birdkin · 17/07/2023 20:38

There really is no obligation to buy teachers presents, and I say this as a teacher myself. So definitely don’t get one if you don’t feel like they deserve it, that said if you’re hoping the teacher will take it as a gesture that you’re not happy they’re not likely to.

Fairislefandango · 17/07/2023 20:39

You wouldn't be unreasonable not to buy the teacher a present even if she'd been great! It's not remotely compulsory to buy your child's teacher a present. They don't expect presents as a matter of course, and it wouldn't be any kind of smite. What you should do is request a meeting with school about why your child's needs aren't being met.

Mum2jenny · 17/07/2023 20:41

Teacher not meeting your expectations, no way would I get her a gift. Didn’t do it for good teachers in the past, so no way for a crap teacher!

SchoolShenanigans · 17/07/2023 20:42

In your circumstances I definitely wouldn't.

Gifts should always be sincere. If it's not, it's pointless.

Bluevelvetsofa · 17/07/2023 20:44

Well, you won’t mean it, so don’t do it.

Yes, that’s booked in.

This year will be the first year we won't be getting a gift. My daughter is year 6 and going to secondary school in September but her teacher this year has been shocking, knowing she has anxiety and really not helping her and making her worse by singling her out. A lot of other parents have had issues too.

Chickenwing2 · 17/07/2023 21:10

My friend is a teacher and was complaining about the amount of candles she gets. I wouldn't bother
