Would you let a 13 year old look after an almost 7 year old for half an hour

Just that really? Going to be at home with the kids a lot over school hols. Could I nip out for quick run/shops for 30 mins with the 13 year old in charge of the nearly 7 year old. With strict instructions not to open door, cook, go outside etc. I never have so far but think I can be over protective at times so I find it hard to judge.

So:
YABU - yes 30 mins is fine
YANBU - no - that would be completely negligent!

I think babysitty for other people's children is different, your own siblings don't tend to behave well for you whereas others people children do.

I wouldnt, simply from my own experiences my brother was incredibly well behaved until I was left in charge and he would be awful and as he got bigger would start fighting and would hurt me and I don't think my parents ever really believed me as it was so out of character of him.

Of course.

Yes definitely

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/07/2023 19:24

Yes if they're willing. It's a step towards babysitting for you properly in a couple of years Grin

I leaving my 13 year old with 6 year old for up to an hour. Normally watching TV so neither move! He has to stay with her at all times (no going off to own room etc) and works fine. He has a mobile to contact me and strict instructions re not opening door etc.

Yes assuming the sibling dynamic is ok- ie the older one won’t torment the younger one and the younger one will behave for the older one.

My 13 picks up friends 8/9 yos from school, walks them back to ours and looks after them on occasions. She's very sensible though.

I wouldn't have left her in charge of her younger brother though. Once I was happy to leave him alone it was ok. If we go out for the evening we still get a babysitter.

Pinkneonballoon · 17/07/2023 20:05

Yes I would if they are both sensible.

Gymmum82 · 17/07/2023 20:09

My babysitter is 14 and looks after my 6 and 9yr for several hours. I would leave them for much longer than half an hour
