Does anyone else just wing it in their job

Sullyssorryeyes · 17/07/2023 17:49

I have just recently started a new job in middle management. This is my first management role. Oh. My. god. I feel like I'm drowning. The technology, The meetings about meetings, the putting together ideas about anything and everything.
Did anyone else go through something similar? How did/ did you cope?

TIA

Sullyssorryeyes · 17/07/2023 17:50

Just keep going. By the time they find out you will past your 2 years and they won't be able to get rid of you easily.

SeulementUneFois · 17/07/2023 17:52

Keep going. There's lots of us 😜

Nowitstarts · 17/07/2023 17:53

Someone (a man, they do appear to think. bigger on these things) once told me if you don't feel overwhelmed for the first 6 months you took the wrong job - ie you weren't ambitious enough.

You'll learn loads and soon settle down.

Poppysmom22 · 17/07/2023 17:53

Sounds like a touch of imposter syndrome to me. I know because this is me everyone at work thinks I am totally fabulous and a bit of an oracle in terms of our workplace however I feel like I'm paddling madly to keep up

What3words · 17/07/2023 17:55

I'm thinking of applying for my first middle management role and I'm terrified. Whether others will respect me, if I cna manage ... if it will all be too hard, if I cna cope...if I'm giving up something I like!

PumpkinQueen1 · 17/07/2023 18:04

Middle management, zero training or support, and I spend most of my day trying to deal with a team who act like school children.

I just keep going, while looking for another job.

Sullyssorryeyes · 17/07/2023 18:05

Glad it's not just me then!! I was seriously doubting myself today. I keep revisiting my job interview in my head trying to figure out why I was offered the job 😐

I think most of us feel like we have no idea what we are doing half the time 😄 if you are on LinkedIn you can often join groups relating to your job/industry or just leadership in general. I spend a fair bit of time.of an evening just scrolling my feed for interesting articles or cheat sheets and that is quite helpful. Never be afraid to Google, people think I'm some sort of excel expert when in reality I'm just good at Google. You will get into the swing of it after a while

gingersnappz · 17/07/2023 18:17

Yep - basically drove home for the first 6 months thinking "what the fuck have I done".

2 years in now and I still feel like I'm winging it but I've basically got through by knowing what my weaknesses are and not pretending I know things that I don't, and asking for support from people who do know...and by being nice to people as then they're more than happy to support you!

Sullyssorryeyes · 17/07/2023 18:18

@What3words that's how I felt too..still feel the same but others have said it will get better with time so I'm going to give it a good go and perhaps you could too

OP posts:
Sullyssorryeyes · 17/07/2023 18:22

@gingersnappz yes to being nice to people! At first I thought I should be a bit more authorative but sod that I'm just going to be myself. It's hard enough trying to wing it without having to be something I'm not

You too @Sullyssorryeyes

Give it some time and I'm sure things will seem easier.

Daphnis156 · 17/07/2023 18:23

If all day is meetings, then you never have to do anything- that's why management is all meetings!
We used to say management could heat our building with all their hot air...

Might it be possible to watch someone you consider does the job really well, get in conversation with them, and get a feel for what you can learn from them, perhaps someone a little older, but not some old duffer.

gingersnappz · 17/07/2023 18:25

@Sullyssorryeyes absolutely - my staff describe me as "fun but no pushover" and I think that's a good balance!

Sullyssorryeyes · 17/07/2023 18:27

@Daphnis156 there's not much scope to shadow anyone to be honest. The only thing getting me through the last few weeks has been me taking it one day at a time and ticking off my daily tasks. But today shit got real and I was asked for my EXPERT OPINION on something!!! I nearly wet myself.

The best advice i can give is to remember this:At the end of the day, when they've all touched base and got to the crux of the matter, the other managers probably don't know what they're doing either. They just heavily disguise it with manager jargon!

TheMagicDeckchair · 17/07/2023 18:44

It could go either way- I had a job that I felt was the wrong fit, and out of my depth and never really settled. It was a relief to leave. But it had a pretty toxic culture. That job involved lots of meetings and overbearing bosses.

If the people around you are supportive it might be ok!

The only thing I would caution is that staying in a “bad fit” job long term can be pretty damaging.

Hope things improve for you!

Roseyleaf · 17/07/2023 18:44

I'm definitely winging it. But I take comfort in the fact that most of my colleagues are too.

amberisola · 17/07/2023 18:48

I felt like this after I was promoted into a role I wouldn't have dared apply for. I was inexperienced, but my bosses obviously thought I could do it. I did need training and the new tasks were a challenge, but I grew into it. It took me about 3 years to feel confident though!

socksdo · 17/07/2023 18:49

We are all winging it
