Why do some people go out their way to disagree?

Someone I know does this over every single topic and it’s annoying, I can’t understand why

Like, you will remark on something and they will say ‘it’s not that, it’s actually XYZ’ or ‘I don’t think that means anything’ or ‘going off that is never accurate anyway’

I must try to have a thicker skin but it’s grating on me and knocking me back a bit, even minor conversational things they have to disagree. Each and every time. Why do some people do this?!

I know a few people like that and honestly I just distance myself from them cos it's all too much hard work OP

Bit tricky though if it's a close family member

It’s not a family member on either side thankfully 😅

I know someone like that. You can say look at that lovely green grass and they will argue it's blue. I try not to talk to them. It's too much like hard work.

Why do you think they do it? Their own low self esteem or just to be annoying?

This was a major factor in the end of a relationship for me. I don't think the person concerned even realises they are doing it, but it's relentless.

Even the most trivial observation was instantly gainsaid, it was very wearing in the end, although I find it comical now looking back.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 17/07/2023 17:42

Ha, I was just wondering this myself. I think some people are just twats Grin

Oh gosh I don’t know how you could put up with it in a relationship!

Tbh this person is more of an acquaintance but I have to see them fairly regularly

I probably am this person to my in laws.

But then they do spout a lot of factually incorrect bollocks sometimes.

Itisallgoingtobeok · 17/07/2023 18:10

@socksdo honestly, I don't think they like a woman being right or knowing things they don't. Dreadful.

Florissante · 17/07/2023 18:13

It depends: is it a correction or an opinion?

amberisola · 17/07/2023 18:26

I think it depends what they're being contrary about.

I know one person who always has to be right, or know better, or have done more, etc. I avoid as much as possible. I believe it's insecurity.

OTOH my DB has a tendency to do this sometimes, but he is heavily suspected ND, and it's usually him being very literal. It's annoying all the same, especially when correcting trivial comments made in passing - for eg. recently I said "there's no one in that restaurant tonight' and he said "well actually there are two people in there". Argh!
