Impact of SUVs in a crash

MassiveCars · 17/07/2023 00:48

Recently there was a terrible accident involving a 2 ton car
What stood out was the mention of the weight of the vehicle
So I did a couple of calcs
An SUV of 1972kg doing 30mph has the same Kinetic Energy of a small car of 1221kg doing 38mph
A larger SUV of 2598kg has the same Kinetic Energy of a small car of 1221kg doing 44mph
All these large SUVs doing 30mph create the same damage as a smaller car doing 38mph to 44mph
There must be enough maths & physics teachers on here to check this out
I did think of mentioning the small car and the big car types ?

But large SUVs (=large weight) are a much more serious danger to kids at 30mph than your small cars at 30mph

There is great emphasis on 30mph, perhaps we should enforce slower speeds for heavier vehicles if safety is the objective

You seem late to the party. Let me catch you up.

  1. Yes he was in a perfect place to give first hand knowledge OF THAT PARTICULAR ACCIDENT More than you or any of the other posters here who seem to think otherwise
  2. No one, him or me, have said anywhere in this thread that SUV’s don’t have a higher center of gravity and chance to roll
  3. He is not a mansplainer
  4. I am not a silly little woman who needs my nerves soothed from the scary outside world
  5. Oreo’s is probably not going to give up her horse to drive a small car
  6. Physics nerds are awesome
  7. SamanthaCain is still insulting me and “hubby”

I think that covers it. Oh and somebody called someone else a twat and got their post deleted.

At the end of the day people will buy the vehicles they want

I think you've forgotten, or perhaps don't realise, that the reason you've received a lot of responses is because of this post.

@HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas posted a perfectly reasonable statement and you responded with a snarky statement, which, let's face it, was a bit bizarre.

I'm not insulting you or your husband. Just pointing out that us 'physics nerds' understand physics. None of us were questioning the SUV rolling (although I've never seen a turtle flip) but it's quite a leap to dismiss the possibility that a car might not have flipped like a turtle, basically because cars take a lot more to flip than SUV's.

Not late to the party at all. I was here hours and hours ago, I’m the person you made the silly, pointless remark about turtles to if you remember? You seem a bit hard of thinking to be honest.

your second point…..you kind of did say that. Because when I made that point, which was the only point I made you dismissed it and said that wasn’t the case. And related some pointless story about a particular incident and said the car hadn’t rolled because it was an SUV when your husband has no way of knowing that. If you firmly believe your second point why did you argue with me when that was the point I made?

My husband is a police officer, I could pointlessly relate numerous tales of crashes he’s been to where SUVs have rolled, and crashes he’s Been to where a non SUV hasn’t rolled. It’s all irrelevant…..even though he reckons on balance from his anecdotal evidence that an SUV is more likely to roll.

because for a particular accident nobody will know if a car of a different design would have had the same result. Which you seem unable to comprehend.

the important thing is the evidence. The crash tests. So why when I make a statement which is patently true do you make some irrelevant comment about how in your husband’s particular experience the fact it was an SUV wasn’t a factor? He can’t know that at all! If it had been a fiesta and was side swiped maybe it wouldn’t have rolled. It’s more likely it wouldn’t have rolled. It’s not rocket science.

Yes vehicles with a higher center of gravity will roll more often than those without.

Hmm I wonder who could have written the above??? Maybe rhymes with Fallteensandtoffeetups?

You’re now just arguing with yourself you know that right?

No, she wrote a silly little thing about SUVs just deciding to flip over like turtles. 👍

But you’re probably right it was the SUV that just randomly decided to flip on it’s back like a turtle 4-5 times.

I don’t know why you’re screenshotting a post which is nothing to do with me. 🤷‍♀️. It wasn’t be who mentioned your “hubby” wanting to stop you from panicking.

I don’t think it’s “smug” to quote your turtle post which you seems to be denying with your “look again” comment. Why look again? I know what you said.

anyway you do you, have a lovely day

mollyminniemo · 18/07/2023 07:02

No to even more lower speed limits. But yes to more people thinking twice about buying vile tanks in urban/ suburban areas they don’t need and just look ridiculous in. We are SW London and every other car is a Range or Land Rover they are ugly, horrific, tanks that just aren’t needed.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 17/07/2023 15:09

So the nanny state is going to ban commercial vehicles then?

Are you a complete simpleton or being deliberately obtuse? Or the third option, a Daily Mail parroter incapable of even slightly nuanced thought?

If legislation puts barriers in the way of you doing whatever you damn well please as cheaply as possible and with minimal inconvenience (and hang everyone else), it does not follow that you live in a nanny state.

Sigmama · 18/07/2023 09:52

Yeah bring back smoking indoors and no seat belts I say

OneTC · 18/07/2023 10:27

Oreosareawful · 17/07/2023 13:52

How bloody ridiculous.
Some of us are working mums. I have just enough time to get to work from dropping off the kids if I'm in the car. If I walked the kids to school and then walked home again I would be 30 minutes late.
The same happens on the way home, just enough time to drive to the school from work. Not an option to drop the car at home first and walk to pick them up.
and YES- I drive a big monstrosity of an SUV because I have a horse and need to tow a trailer.
and YES- I passed my driving test and trailer test first time with minimal faults because I can fucking drive.

If you have A horse in a single trailer you don't need the 3.5t pulling weight that you get from a monstrosity sized SUV. You could pull that with a small SUV. And if you could pull it with a small SUV then you could definitely pull it with a 4x4 estate. Then you could collect your kids, drive your horse and improve the survivability of other road users.

If you've got multiple horses and a big box and you need the 3.5t pulling weight then crack on and just think how nice it will be moving your trailer around with all the unnecessary SUVs off the road. I don't want to remove them from people with genuine need. The percentage of them on the road that are ever used as anything other than a runaround is negligible, especially in urban environments.

I've lived rurally, I drive or travel into rural areas every day from where I live on the outskirts of South London. The vehicles being driven functionally are totally different to the ostentatious plastic imposters you see in central London. There's plenty of the imposters in the countryside as well though, cos it's not about scratching your status symbol making a bit of room on a country lane

There is a certain demographic buying these because a/ status and b/ their individual safety is being judged as being of sufficient importance that choosing the endangerment of other people feels acceptable to them. They are the people that need to make better choices and if the trend continues in people getting bigger and bigger vehicles to drive 2 miles in London with then there needs to be legal curbs on their ownership.

Was that the problem though? Reports stated the woman had a seizure and then pressed the accelerator during her fit. That could happen to anybody. Will you ban all EVs, vans and lorries?

This is what happened in my hometown when a dustcart careened off a roundabout into a crowd.

Sigmama · 18/07/2023 12:36

not all working mums need suvs

I guess when I say SUV I’m talking about a specific shape, generally higher than a saloon car, usually 4 wheel drive (or has 4 wheel drive versions) something that looks a similar shape to a range rover. It’s one of those, you’ll know it when you see it. For me more than anything it’s the height of these cars for the reasons I set out in my previous post.

Yes I agree with the keep cars till the drop= the best environmentally. Well actually walking/public transport is but that’s not as good for the economy.

Your last sentence is an important point. Electric cars weren't developed to save the planet, they were developed to save the car industry. By all means buy one when you replace your ICE car, they're better than those, but don't kid yourself that it absolves you of all sin. The green ways to travel are walking/cycling/public transport in that order.

Quite. I walk 50% of the time, take the train 30% and when there is no local transport option then I take the car, my 12 year old car which will get up valley roads where no bus dares to drive.

Had the fencing between the road and school been stronger it could never have happened whatever the size of the vehicle. How about we look at improving ways of keeping pedestrians and vehicles apart, whatever their size?

Are you suggesting that we should stick up Armco barriers along all pavements?
