In particular prescribed to children. Been having absolute hell with my 3.5 year old for about 2/3 months now - every night the same. Extremely hyper at bedtime, not able to relax, can't drift off. Taking hours to get him to sleep.

We've tried a few things, such as no screens before bed and all the usual stuff but nothing works.

We're awaiting an autism diagnosis but I can't go on like this anymore. I have a paediatrician appointment next month so I will be explaining everything then, but are they really likely to do anything to help?

My ASD son was prescribed after jumping through many, many hoops. Leaving him suicidal from lack of sleep. When, eventually, it was prescribed it worked like a charm so long as he could settle in the window of opportunity.

When he got to 18 and aged out of CAHMS, our GP refused to prescribe, advising that it could only be prescribed by an adult psychiatrist and "would he like addictive (benzo) sleeping tablets instead?" FFS.

A.m.a.z.o.n. USA became my friend. Never a problem with deliveries (they did take ages tho)

PS He decided about a year ago to stop taking it and lo and behold, his sleep is fucked up again

Game changer for my teen with ADHD. Slow release version prescribed by her psychiatrist.

Just as a word of caution, sleep clinic threatened to report me to safeguarding if I gave DS non prescribed melatonin despite agreeing he needed to be referred to their prescribing clinic.

I wasn't overly worried that safeguarding would do very much about it for an otherwise safe and well cared for child but just so people are aware.

I'm in Australia, so I buy it from Evelyn Fay. The brand is 'DB Dispensary Magnesium +'. The staff member knew exactly why I wanted a theanine supplement (she has ADHD), and recommended this one for my 8 year old. The theanine needs to be mixed with magnesium for optimal results, which is why it's blended in this product. He's had a straight mag supplement in the past, but it didn't have the same effect as the theanine blend.

DS was still bouncing around at 11pm the other night (despite melatonin and catapres), and DH said 'Did he have his drink?' I'd forgotten to make it... It makes a BIG difference.

sorry, forgot to tag GoldenKiwi in my post above.

I begged the doctor and he prescribed 1mg tablets. DD is suspected ASD and had got into a loop of lack of sleep that it was contributing to what I now believe was a mental breakdown. She started off with 1 tablet a night, then a quarter, but that wasn't enough. Half a tablet was the sweet spot and we discussed it every night, whether she needed it or not, in conjunction with the usual sleep hygiene routines. After about 4 months she stopped taking it and is sleeping reasonably well now. Can't use Piriton, which was what the doctor first suggested, as that gives her nightmares.

Thank you, I will take a look

Is there a typo on this thread or did someone say they gave a two month old baby melatonin?!

I should proofread! 2 years - possibly even more like 3 (it was a while ago), not 2 months!

CamCola · 18/07/2023 11:46

I get it for my son who has autism.

He was maybe 6-7 when we got it prescribed.

Melatonin only helps them get to sleep. It doesn’t keep them asleep.

We had Circadan to start and we have now switched to Adaflex.

(not 100% they are spelt correct).

Thepossibility · 18/07/2023 11:50

We get it from Iherb. Do you have that in the UK? I'm in Australia. I take it and my 3yo takes the gummies. No side effects whatsoever other than a good night's sleep.

JustMint · 18/07/2023 11:53

Try magnesium as well. Magnesium Glycerate an hour before bed time even if your kid has an excellent diet it’s depleted in soils.

Vitamin D as well.

Splat92 · 18/07/2023 12:00

I've taken it myself. I have problems with getting to sleep and staying asleep. I find it helps with getting to sleep but not really with staying asleep despite getting the slow release version.

Anybody know if you have to pay customs on items from Piping Rock?

When I've ordered from there, the customs charges are all included in the price you pay for shipping. I've never had to pay customs separately.
