To go to the GP about brain fog?

I'm in my late 20s, otherwise healthy aside from anxiety which I am on citalopram for.

I get this brain fog quite often when I go out. I feel dazed and confused, and it's a physical pressure/sensation I can feel on my forehead and in my eyes. I've had it outside, in shops and in dimly lit restaurants so it's not fluorescent lighting like I originally thought. I've only noticed it in the last few years but I think I've had it for a lot longer but always associated it with just being tired.

I struggle to pay attention when I feel like this.

I'm thinking of going to the GP about it but I'm worried that they will either think I'm over-exaggerating or go the other route and think there's something seriously wrong which could impact my career.

Does anyone have this issue or know what it might be?

Do you have any other symptoms of anything... such as IBS, bloating, tummy problems, rashes, low iron?

AIBot · 16/07/2023 20:32

I would get it checked by a doctor.

I do get rashes on my neck a few times week which I think are stress-related. I had a blood test a few months ago which was all normal.

I get silent migraines and feel exactly like that in the lead up, I then get bad visual aura but not much of a headache to speak of. I'm triggered by bright lights, low lights, stress, dehydration, neck tension to name a few things. Lots of my attacks have started in supermarkets and places with florescence.

Do you know if the blood test tested tTG-IgA?

Brain fog is a very common symptom of undiagnosed coeliac disease.

It sounds like a symptom of a panic attack, especially with your history of anxiety. I used to have panic attacks fairly frequently and this kind of brain fog and disassociation was the main symptom for me.

I had brain fog like that when I was on citroplam

I'm sorry you are suffering with this OP.

My DH took Citalopram for anxiety several years ago. He had the exact same symptoms as you. I've just asked him to describe how it was and he said, 'It was like a fog, as though I wasn't really there and I had a feeling like the ceiling was pressing right down on my forehead, especially in dimly lit places.'

He had group and individual therapy and was able to come off of the Citialopram gradually. When he stopped taking the medication the symptoms stopped and he is now much better and his anxiety has gone - although we don't take that for granted. His GP was a great help so I'd definitely see yours - it can't do any harm.

Go to GP. A relative was having brain fog and it turned out to be a symptom of undiagnosed high blood pressure. When bp was taken in the surgery it was 200+ over another very big number.

The fogginess occurred before I was on any kind of anxiety medication, including citalopram so I don't think it's that.

I've also had my blood pressure taken a few times over the last few months and it's always normal.

It's interesting that coeliac is mentioned as I did have some issues with blood in my stool last year, but I had a colonoscopy and all biopsies were normal so the doctor said that he thinks it was food poisoning. I remember I did have a coeliac blood test which came back negative though.
