To think leaps are a load of rubbish

Obviously babies go through different milestones and learn different things as they grow, but I recently deleted the wonder weeks app as I found it was making me anxious and worried about the weeks ahead reading about when my DD's "fussy" phases would be.
She's been in 'leap 4' for just over a week now and she hasn't been much trouble at all. A little fussier maybe but nothing like what I was imagining it would be like!! The app worried me because it said it's supposed to be the worst leap out of all of them and when I realised it's not that bad and she actually doesn't necessarily follow the pattern of fussy/skills phases I got rid of the app.

Absolute fucking shite - my child did not match up to any of their ‘supposed leaps.’ Followed a few insta accounts of parents with babies the same age and the way they obsessed over it was ridiculous. Funnily enough - some have now had their second child and leaps are no longer mentioned 💁🏻‍♀️

BillieShears · 16/07/2023 18:38

DS matched them exactly! I wish there was an app that continued through the pre-school years

Cakeandslippers · 16/07/2023 18:39

Oh it's made up nonsense! I do think babies / young children go though short phases of being hard work then suddenly have a new skill... but I don't think it happens at fixed times as this book / app would have you believe. At least that's my experience anyway.

It’s all bollocks.

The basic principle that big developments happen in fits and starts, and sometimes means grumpiness, is sound I think. But the idea that you can predict them so accurately and they’re the same for every baby is nuts.

Coleslawclara · 16/07/2023 18:40

It’s all a scam! But talk to my SIL and she’ll wax lyrical on it for hours 🙄

Debini · 16/07/2023 18:41

Yes I downloaded the wonder weeks app and deleted it swiftly, seems like a load of clap trap 🤣

WhiteFire · 16/07/2023 18:41

I think this was coming a thing when my youngest was small, she never slept, never settled and fed constantly all the time. A 'wonder week' was my norm.

Hugasauras · 16/07/2023 18:41

Pretty sure the guy's research got discredited by his own assistant.

VisionsOfSplendour · 16/07/2023 18:42

Had your mum heard of leaps? Do you think she failed in your upbringing?

Lammveg · 16/07/2023 18:44

I think people just want to find meaning and reason in their babies behaviour for reassurance....babies can be stressful!

I don't believe in them but can see why some people do.

God mine too. Couldn't mention that DD was sleeping badly when our kids were babies for fear of being lectured about what 'leap' she was going through/heading towards/just coming out of as if she'd found the antidote to having a baby and they are all programmed exactly the same.
DD was 6 weeks prem too so I avoided stuff like this because it wouldn't have been accurate and likely have made me more anxious.

89redballoons · 16/07/2023 19:23

It's total bollocks, but not easy to disprove because it's all very subjective. The "signs" that a baby is going through a leap are so vague that you can always convince yourself they are - disturbed sleep, clinging to their mum, being generally unsettled and learning new skills very quickly are kind of just what babies do.

i've seen the Wonder Weeks called "horoscopes for babies" and I agree it's about as accurate as a horoscope.

angelikacpickles · 16/07/2023 19:24

Total and utter nonsense.

DappledThings · 16/07/2023 19:26

It's absolute bollocks.

I agree with this.

There's no reason to think that those developments can possibly be predicted so precisely. Physical development milestones (rolling, sitting, crawling etc) all have wider ranges of when it's normal for them to start.
