Not to let in a car from every lane in the car park?

Diagram attached. Excuse my artwork.

I was in a busy supermarket car park on Friday. I don't normally shop there and didn't realise that the school over the road kicks out early on Fridays, so the car park was rammed with parents picking up their children when I was leaving. I was parked at the far end of the car park. I queued to exit, let in a car queuing in the next lane along, but not the cars in all the lanes after that. It took me 25 minutes to get out of the carpark.

The drivers of the cars I didn't let out seemed really annoyed and were glaring/beeping. In my mind, I let out one car and so had done my bit. If I let out one car from every lane, and the cars I let in also let in one car from every lane, that would have added about 10 cars in front of my original position. Surely, the car I let in just lets a car in from the next lane, and so on?

I feel your pain. I got incredibly cross last weekend about a similar situation.

One of the thames crossings was closed so the queues for the others were enormous. I decided to use Tower Bridge and queued for miles.

When I got closer to the bridge I discovered that loads of cars were just flying up the outside lane and then muscling in. And the drivers in the turning left (onto bridge) lane were letting them.

It increased my wait time dramatically (took 45 mins to get over the bridge in the end!).

I also thought the signage could have been much better further out to alert people that the left hand lane was for tower bridge.

TrishTrix · 16/07/2023 12:10

I actually wound my window down and told the driver of a Mercedes estate who was trying to muscle in that by this point I'd been in the queue for 40 minutes and if he thought he was going to get over the bridge in front of me when he'd just breezed up the right hand lane he could have another think coming.

The car three back though let him in.

Good for you! That would annoy me a lot.

YABU.

BibbleandSqwauk · 16/07/2023 12:28

I really can't get arsed about stuff like this. Realistically it isnt actually going to add much more time to your wait and they are just people going about their business too

5foot5 · 16/07/2023 12:30

YANBU and from your diagram that looks exactly like our local Sainsburys, which can be an absolute nightmare to get out of.

I take the same view as you. I let one person in to the Queue ahead of me and that's that. After all, when you let someone in you are not just letting them in in front of you but also in front of all the people behind you. Anyone thinking that they are not in any hurry and will be all fluffy and lovely and just keep letting people in probably haven't considered that they are influcting thus on all the others in the queue behind them.

helpfulperson · 16/07/2023 12:32

In the tower bridge case both lanes should have been used and merge In turn done at the entrance to the bridge.

TrishTrix · 16/07/2023 12:37

@helpfulperson really? When the left hand lane is signed very clearly turn left (onto bridge) and the right hand lane is signed straight on?

Seriously.

I think you are a major cheeky fucker driver.

TrishTrix · 16/07/2023 12:38

And are exactly the person who would sail past two miles of a queue and then expect to "merge in turn".

Don't try it to me. (I'm the one driving the slightly shitty city car).

Because that's the whole point of a merge in turn 🙄 You was the one that chose to sit in the traffic!

LakeTiticaca · 16/07/2023 12:42

You let one car in. Your work was done. I am usually happy to let one or 2 cars go but get very frustrated when the person in front of me lets about 10 bloody cars in. We all have places to be, dontcha know!! 😉

TrishTrix · 16/07/2023 12:43

@OddsocksinmyDocs but how can it be merge in turn when left hand lane goes left (the queue) and right hand lane goes straight on?

Surely it's just people in the right hand lane forcing their way in because they didn't want to queue.

There wasn't a single fucking sign saying "ignore the road signs. Drive past the queue and then force your way in" which the poster above described as merge in turn.

There was only the usual signage which is left hand lane goes left.

Right hand lane goes straight on.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 16/07/2023 12:46

But if every car did that then the cars in those last lanes would never get out! They could be there hours.

In the area where I live, in the situation you describe, both lanes are used and then 'merge in turn' comes into practise so there isn't a back log of traffic causing chaos.

I'm not sure why you're getting so arsey about it either 🙄

In my mind, the car I let in should let on a car from lane 3. That car let in a car from lane 2, which lets in a car from lane 1. Everyone gets a turn. In beeping cars' minds, everyone lets in everyone and the cars in lane 1 never get out.

Because it took me fucking 45 minutes to drive 2 miles.

And I watched a truck load of people simply drive past the queue and force their way in. Because they are FAR too fucking important to follow the fucking road markings and signage and queue.

arethereanyleftatall · 16/07/2023 12:57

Yanbu.
People who can't work out that everyone letting one car in from each lane, means that the person at the back is stuck for ages longer than everyone else - is thick as mince.

arethereanyleftatall · 16/07/2023 13:23

*are!! Laughing at the irony of my own mistake.

Yeah that would work better for everyone.

viques · 16/07/2023 13:58

Letting one car in earns you brownie points in heaven, but if you let in more Jesus thinks you are trying too hard and are probably overcompensating for doing something awful that he missed so will automatically dock you at least twenty five previous brownie points. I thought everyone knew that.

BlowDryRat · 16/07/2023 19:32

Ah yes, WWJD?
