Asking people to move from reserved train seats

Had a train journey earlier, reserved table seats for us.

The train was delayed, and crowded.

When we got on there were people in our seats, so I said 'sorry guys, we've reserved these' and they moved. No drama.

It's only once we got going and the tannoy played an announcement about being able to claim delay repay, and also you could make a claim if you reserved seats but had to stand that I thought 'shit, is moving people on not the done thing?!'

AIBU, or do you always sit in the seats you've reserved?

Of course you are not BU, why are you even asking?

Hadalifeonce · 14/07/2023 23:14

Of course, if you have reserved seats, sit in them. I think the only time I wouldn't is if someone very elderly was in it. Then you could claim.

Kingsparkle · 14/07/2023 23:15

I always ask people to move, I reserved a seat for a reason. 9 times out of 10 it’s done with no fuss/drama. You will get the odd twat who refuses to move at first or will loudly complain afterwards.

ReachForTheMars · 14/07/2023 23:15

Usually there is an announcement if reserved seats are cancelled. If the announcement comes on then I stand even if I have a reservation.

Issuefroth · 14/07/2023 23:16

Try to. And it incenses me when I have reserved seats and there are people sat there but it has previously been announced reservations don’t count - and the glee the ones in the seats report this with like they have higher rights. And they never move. No, I think reservations should be honoured.

WeAreTheHeroes · 14/07/2023 23:16

Imo it's worse when they decide to cancel all the seat reservations because they know it's far busier than normal. You did the right thing. If it's ever really heaving it's worth asking the train manager if they'll declassify first class.

DappledThings · 14/07/2023 23:16

If the train is really delayed they usually cancel the reservations. So the announcement about having to stand even with a reservation probably refers to that.

SkaneTos · 14/07/2023 23:16

I ask the person to move, because otherwise I will have to sit in someone else's seat, and then they will have to ask me to move, and so on... Better if I get my correct seat right away. (This is for trains where all seats are reserved).

(By the way, I hate confrontation, but I still ask people to move, because of the reason mentioned above).

DemonicCaveMaggot · 14/07/2023 23:17

If the train is crowded it can be impossible to reach the right seats so that is probably what the announcement was aimed at - unless they had announced that all reservations were being voided. You were quite right to move on the people in your seats.

RedDiamond · 14/07/2023 23:18

I was on a journey where my actual booked (seat) train was cancelled. The next available train arrived and it was standing room only.

The Guard was fabulous. He told me to move towards 1st Class as they were just about to decommission it. I ended up sitting with 3 men who were most upset about it all but cheered up when the Guard told them they could claim compensation.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/07/2023 23:19

Presumably you could also claim if the person in your seat refused to move?

BiscuitsandPuffin · 14/07/2023 23:20

Sometimes they double book train seats and sometimes the people sitting in your seat flatly refuse to move even if you show them your ticket. I'd imagine the conductor was talking about those sort of instances. Might be worth reflecting on the fact this has apparently unearthed some deep insecurity. Have confidence in using your voice to get things you need!

Wait didn’t we do this thread last week?

JanesBlond · 14/07/2023 23:32

If you can get to your seat then definitely ask people to move, but I’ve been on very crowded trains plenty of times where you’ve got no hope of squeezing through to your seat so maybe it was a reference to that situation?
