Just bought a "new to us' used car. Got told brakes fully replaced front & rear as part of prep before collection.

Got home and noticed the bits near the brakes look quite rusty. Is this normal? Or should I be concerned?

If it's relevant it's a Toyota with 12 months manufacture warranty if stuff goes wrong excluding wear & tear bits like tyres, brakes etc

This is a massive purchase for me so any advise much appreciated before I query it to the dealer and make a show of myself! I don't know enough about cars arrgh.

‘The bits near the brakes’? Presumably you mean the brake discs, that you can see through the wheel spokes? If that’s the case then yes, it’s a very wet day today and rust can form on them in a matter of hours. It will disappear as soon as you use your brakes again. Don’t worry.

I think you'd need to clarify "bits near the brakes".

Not the circular bits. It's the lump at the side that straddles the circular disk I mean. Hopefully photo more helpful than my description.

All normal. That’s the calliper and isn’t replaced unless broken. The pads and discs are the bits that are replaced x

Stressbedhead · 14/07/2023 20:59

@As476 thank you! They said the disks & pads were all replaced so I'm counting on no big expenses. Literally no spare money after how expensive used cars have become, had to increase my budget by a 3k just to get something decent (I hope) for us. Spending more to get less 😔

Actually random extra question, are locking wheel nuts universal? These ones look really rusty but my old car ones (older style yaris) were in great condition. Wondering if it's worth asking the garage to swap them over, if they'd fit. I need to go back for some missing booklets & bodywork stuff anyway.

@Stressbedhead hiya, they aren’t universal but you can purchase some for your vehicle from places like euro car parts. Lots of wheel nuts in my experience so go rusty but there’s no issues with that - they still work as intended.

Callipers, wheel bolts etc are exposed to the elements so it’s not unusual for them to be rusty. If you need anything, pm me. I am a vehicle technician 🙂

@As476 thank you!

One for Toyota Yaris owners... should the drinks holders have something at the bottom rather than straight onto the plastic?

My last had fabric thick felt-like inserts. The single drinks holder looks particularly iffy with a big hole in the bottom down to the attaching screw. I couldn't use that for small odds & ends without hassle if they ended up down the screw bit!?

I'm going back to the garage tm so want to get my snagging list sorted cos it's a fair distance round trip.
