To wonder if Woman in Black film is appropriate for 11/12 yes olds?

My 12yr old son watched woman in black at school today. I wouldn't of let him watch this at home, mainly as whilst I know he is mature and confident, I also know this sort of film would scare him. Just surprised school didn't ask us first as some children in class still only 11yrs old (yr7s). I'm probably over worrying. Just wondered what others thoughts are?

It is a 12 certificate so shouldn't have been shown in a class where some year seven students are still 11 years old. Teachers should make do with U and PG films until they reach year 8.

I found Woman in Black terrifying and I'm surprised it is only a 12. I found it terrifying.

The subject matter is pretty dark as well. Several child deaths. One was especially graphic and gory for a film that twelve year olds could be watching.

Regardless that my son was fine, I do agree, a key point here is also there were 11yr olds in the room as well.

Is this the one with Daniel Radcliffe in, as I am wondering if I have the right film, there are just a couple of OTT jumpy bits

User10486743 · 14/07/2023 21:18

There are two versions of this film, a cut 12a one which I guess the school shown and that is the one I think I watched as it was on BBC, there was also a 15 version which was more scary and that is on Sky/Now TV. That is why some think it is very scary as they probably see the 15 version.

PuppyMonkey · 14/07/2023 21:55

Saw it ages ago but sometimes when I go for a wee in the night, a sudden thought that she might be there in the dark on the landing still hits me and I do a little scream and have to pull myself together.

I would not like to see this film again. I’m 56.

User10486743 · 14/07/2023 22:00

I have just downloaded the 15 version as I obviously watched the one for schools first time.

OneTC · 14/07/2023 22:04

The ITV one stayed with me ever since but it's excellent, they put it on at Christmas in a normal time slot iirc

Definitely not suitable for 11 year olds. A bit late now since they've already shown it to the children!

How many kids are still 11 in Y7. Basically only those born in late July and August. Some of the August birthdays may have deferred entry so could be nearly 13.

I don't think that matters, regardless if any kid is 11, even just one, they shouldn't show it surely?!

The film is rated 12, it’s mid-July, and the kids are Y7, so if there are any kids in the class who are still 11 (which there might not be) they’ll only be three or four weeks away from turning 12 anyway. I couldn’t get at all worked up about this, honestly. It’s a ghost story, so yeah, some of them might be a bit scared, but just because some kids might be scares that doesn’t mean it’s not age-appropriate. It is OK for kids to be scared in a safe way sometimes.

Runningonjammiedodgers · 14/07/2023 22:38

I shit my pants when I watched it.

It's 12a so anyone under 12 can watch it but must be accompanied by an adult - the teacher. The one they watched will be the mildly scary version.

Whatafustercluck · 14/07/2023 22:55

My 12yo ds is made of stern stuff and doesn't scare easily. Woman in Black terrified him and he asked us to turn it off.

Well, actually, mine! Summer-born and still very immature!

BitOutOfPractice · 14/07/2023 23:14

I have literally no idea how this film got a 12 certificate. It’s really creepy and scary

toomanyleggings · 14/07/2023 23:16

I think I remember this being on a scheme of work and being asked to show it to y8. Didn’t think much of it at the time but as mum now I wouldn’t like mine watching it

TheOrigRights · 14/07/2023 23:16

I am 52. I spent the whole film watching my foot when I went to see it in the cinema.
Fine with horror and gore but I cannot to jump scares.

horseymum · 14/07/2023 23:21

Definitely not suitable for all 11/12 year olds. Our school showed this and I complained as DC was incredibly upset and wouldn't go to English for a couple of weeks. They then proceeded to show it a few months later as they just went into the next year. There's a 15 version and a 12 one I think but no reason to show either imho. Some of our teachers just don't think and might assume all teens live horror ( this is not teacher bashing, I'm very supportive of our school in general). My young tween still enjoys Mallory towers and horrid histories! Parents need to comment when we don't think things are right as we know our children best. We need to teach our children that not everything they get taught might be right or suitable and to question ( in a polite manner) especially if they feel uncomfortable.

aSofaNearYou · 14/07/2023 23:24

I think it's too scary for that age group, personally. I studied the play in year 10 and everyone was pretty scared by that, the film is scarier if anything and the kids a fair bit younger.

I wouldn't show them something like that until GCSE age.

horseymum · 14/07/2023 23:26

Plenty people saying it's not that scary , they're nearly 12 etc. I don't think kids should be made to feel so uncomfortable in school at any age. Obviously 16/17 need to read more challenging things but there's no need to constantly push the boundaries. Even if it was the 12 version and they were all 12, I personally don't think it's suitable and would be disappointed if my next child was made to watch it despite feeling uncomfortable with it.

WotNoUserName · 14/07/2023 23:32

My now 24 yo watched it at school when he was about 14. He's not easily scared, but it scared him and he refused to watch it again, even when his younger brothers wanted to watch it when they were 11. Despite them being terrified of anything and everything when they were younger they were fine with it! I don't think they watched it at school though, or they never mentioned it as they'd already seen it.

I hadn't actually seen it when my oldest told me he'd watched it at school, and didn't know how jump scary it was. I think 14 was ok for watching it though, even though the other two were 11, I was with them and would have turned it off it was too much for them, whereas at school they would have had to have watched it.

Olleochalex · 14/07/2023 23:35

I just watched this this evening. It scared me so much that I scared the dog! No way would i let dd (11) watch this. Maybe it's different in a class though (although i double it).

BitOutOfPractice · 14/07/2023 23:42

Which “mildly scary version” of the WIB is that @User10486743 ?

Toohotforchips · 15/07/2023 00:22

I think they are too young. It's creepy and disturbing and the images of the children's deaths are haunting. Maybe it's better if they discuss it after and see how the tension is built?

An Inspector Calls is another text they study with a creepy, but brilliant TV adaptation that lingers the memory.

The 12a version rather than the 15 version which is on Sky at the moment, I watched the 12a version and there were just a couple of jumpy bits iirc, the play was far better and scarier. I haven't watched the 15 version, though will do as it is on Sky.

User10486743 · 15/07/2023 05:29

It's a bit pointless asking about a film like this as no one knows which one people watched to discuss it properly.
