Sorry posting for traffic but I’m at the end of my tether. This post is super outing but I don’t care I’m desperate

my mum has gone on holiday and I’m dog sitting. Fine. Her dog is high maintenance, he was originally got as his breed is a classic apartment dog and apparently doesn’t need much exercise. Not this guy.

he won’t eat dog food, has to eat meat, has to be cooked that day won’t eat left overs. I knew this before, so whilst it’s annoying, fine I can deal.
until today. I made chicken last night for him, but he had left over beef, so gave him the chicken today and he’s not eaten it-fine whatever.

but today he’s shitting in the house. The dog is fully toilet trained and been on 3 walks of at least 30 mins each already. He also has access to a garden if he needs it. He’s done is 3 times. I’ve two young children. So I’ve cleaned and vax’d my carpet 3 times today! 3! Aka more than I do in a year! He’s not poorly. Absolutely fine in himself. Not eaten anything off or dodgy.

what can I do? I’m worried about tonight that he’s going to soil in the hall and my 4 year old will tread on it if she goes for a wee in the night.

he can’t be left downstairs alone because he barks and barks and barks if alone.

@Goshdarndog can you put any covers down on your carpets? Even towels? It is annoying, our 11 month is not 100% toilet trained, but we don't have carpets so it doesn't bother me. I know she will get there in the end.

I can go out and get some puppy pads i think. Our hallway is quite big so I guess I’ll have to coat the the whole thing .

Soubriquet · 14/07/2023 20:03

Can you get some puppy pads and place then where he’s soiling. Are you cleaning the area with a biological cleaner too? It will leave a scent otherwise that will attract him back to it. Least a puppy pad can be picked up and disposed of

Jongleterre · 14/07/2023 20:03

Telling a dog off for a bodily function it can't control?

Let's hope your husband gets a clip round the ear in his twilight years when he souls himself.

What a horrible and ignorant thing to do to a poor animal that is missing it's owner.

FOJN · 14/07/2023 20:05

Someone is going to have to sleep downstairs with him if you want him to stay quiet and not shit on your carpets.

FictionalCharacter · 14/07/2023 20:05

Goshdarndog · 14/07/2023 19:53

He been told off once, and by that I mean my husband said no in a stern voice. He’s not getting a rollicking, it was the third time and it was frustrating I did tell DH that it would make it worse

I hope your "D" H doesn't tell him off again. As a PP said, the poor dog doesn't know he's being told off for pooing indoors. He thinks he's being told off for pooing.
It absolutely is stress. He is away from his home, you're pissed off with him, your husband is pissed off, he feels that, and there's no sign of his owner. Dogs have no concept of "she'll be back in a few days".
Best if your mum finds something else to look after him next time.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 14/07/2023 20:01

How often do you take him out to go to the toilet in between walks?
Do you know to watch for the signs of him needing to go? (circling, sniffing and squatting are the key ones).
Are you cleaning up the accidents with a proper pet enzyme solution?

Your DH needs to stop telling him off for toileting indoors - even a firm "no" is enough to encourage them to go off and toilet in "secret".

Lots of opportunities to go outside, lots of praise when he gets it right and ignore it when he gets it wrong (and clean it up properly).

I’ve had 2 dogs before him and grew up with them, that’s why I’m so lost here. He’s not signalled needing to go at all… which he does normally. He’s had an opportunity to go out every other hour I’d say, or more if he’s asked. Which he hasn’t.

what’s a pet enzyme solution? I did it with vax pet detergent, anti bac and carpet cleaner. I’ll have to go to asda tonight to get some

Feed him early and take up water about an hour after feeding. Then take him in the garden or for a walk until he wees and poos.

Where ever he is sleeping try and confine it to as small a space as possible, and put a blanket or sheet down on the floor incase he does have an accident.

Try not to give him too much variety of food incase that is causing some stomach issues.

On a separate note, a diet of only cooked meat is not good. And there’s no ‘won’t eat dog food’ ‘won’t eat leftovers’- the dog is spoilt.

Thunderisntnicebythebeach · 14/07/2023 20:09

My previous ddog would shit definitely when her world wasn't revolving just about her.. For 10 years.

My mum tells the dog off if he’s naughty, dh hasn’t had any pets before so saw it from her and assumed.

he was frustrated and he’s inexperienced with animals.

Something like Simple Solution (you can get it off Amazon but big supermarkets might sell it too).

Basically it neutralises the enzymes in the pee/poo so that the dog isn't tempted to go in the same space again. We used it when ours was toilet training and it worked a charm. Just spray it on, leave it to soak and dry off with a towel.

I didn’t know that. I’ll go to the shop and get some!

You said he's poohed 3times today. How many times does he usually go?
Is it a change in frequency?

sometimes we were out an hr and he wouldn’t go, I can’t stay out longer because of work, would that be he just didn’t need to go? Or stress?

he was sleeping my mums room but the hall too my mum said we can’t close the door on him as he’ll howl and scratch the door. Should I close the door to the bedrooms and have him in the hall?

he has to have fresh cooked meat cut up tiny with some dry food she gets from the vets, they know how fussy he is. She before had left food down, or given the same dried food and he went without food for 3 days. She broke then.

my mum gave me a chicken and 4 steaks for him and 2 duck legs. But he refused to eat the chicken today, she said he does that with chicken so to try the duck if he does. She said it’s what the vet said. He was a rescue and the rescue centre had the same issue with him. He was a street dog before so they think he lived on scraps which is why he doesn’t like dog food

Maybe twice?

he didn’t go yesterday so I thought it might be a clear out

Maybe it’s that?

he’s ‘mummy’s little Prince’ with my mum and here it’s just busier. So maybe he’s not getting enough attention like he wants?

Telling a dog off for toileting does not help at all. Just take him outside. He sounds very very stressed. Can one of you stay up late with him and the other one get up early. Late walk and early walk with lots of cuddles and reassurance in between?
follow his normal food routine and normal times

RunningFromInsanity · 14/07/2023 20:25

Closing the doors is likely to make him scratch, bark or poo out of protest. Perhaps shut all doors but leave your bedroom door open but block it so he can see and hear you, but can’t physically get in. That way any mess is contained to one area. A baby gate is ideal.

He has no routine with my mum 😭😭😭

hes stayed at other peoples houses and wasn’t like this. Although he did clear a 6 ft fence once to get home and that person refused to look after him again. But he didn’t poop indoors

I don’t have a spare baby gate… mine are in usage. Do you think leaving my room door just open will be ok ?

So they only had beckmans pet thingy, it says stops re soiling so I got that. Hopefully does the trick.

how long should I be walking him for the poster who says it wasn’t long enough(not arsey, genuine question) I had a collie cross before and half an hr 40 mins, 3/ 4 times a day is what he got and he was happy with that. Never had any issues. He’d play though whereas this dog doesn’t really play with toys and doesn’t fetch. Could that mean he needs extra time out?

RunningFromInsanity · 14/07/2023 22:48

You can leave the door open I was just trying to think of ways to stop him pooing on your bedroom floor.

I think it sounds like he is getting enough exercise in my opinion.

He seems to want to sleep in our spare room which is my mums room, what do I do? Just leave puppy pads everywhere?

OP posts:
cinnamonfrenchtoast · 15/07/2023 10:23

How did you get on last night?

If he wants to sleep in your mums' room then I would let him - it would probably comfort him in many ways as he'll still be able to smell her in there.

I don't personally think there's any need to cover the entire floor in puppy pads - they're designed to encourage dogs to toilet on them, so one or two strategically placed ones should be enough. But if you're really concerned about your floors, covering everywhere is fine too.

Housekeeperbatcocoa · 15/07/2023 10:26

You don't need to vax the carpet after a solid poo. If your garden is safe and it's not too hot, I'd maybe shut him out for 20mins or so more often, keeping an eye on him through the window.

Mumtothreegirlies · 15/07/2023 10:47

He’s just stressed. Plenty of walks and cuddles, cover the carpets and also he needs vegetables in with the cooked meats.
