Help me! How do I get rid of this expanding foam?

Posting here for traffic sorry.

Long story short, I’ve had mice within my flat for about a year now. I private rent and the EA sent over a guy who does all of their pest control. Sometime last year he came to the property to fill a hole with wire wool and A LOT of expanding foam.

Fast forward to now I’m still having issues with mice. I have two young children and refuse to live like this any longer so I’ve contacted a pest control company and will pay for them to carry out treatment and mice proofing. The company cannot do the mice proofing whilst this expanding foam is in place. This is because they can’t guarantee that they’ve covered all holes as they don’t know if mice are still coming through the expanding foam.

I’ve contacted the guy who put the expanding foam underneath the kickboard and he’s said that he won’t remove it😐 (probably because he knows he added so much that this is gonna be a big job to remove).

Can someone PLEASE tell me how I remove this? Are there any companies who can remove this in South West London? I’ve had a look and can only find companies who deal with spray foam, not expanding foam. Please help!! I really need this mouse proofing done asap. I’ve included a pic of the expanding foam

You can cut through it with a knife. I don't see the big issue here from the pest control people (add long as they are authorised to remove it).

Soudal do a product that will remove cured expanding foam, cut out as much as you can first.

I see in the picture, there appears to be electrical cables in the foam, you d need to consider that, the wire mesh will make removal difficult too.

To get rid of mice, you need long term use of poison, the holes mice can get through are tiny and if your in a terraced house, they can move through the loft space from your neighbours.

I'd try a different pest control person, expanding foam shouldn't be stopping them from using poison.

But the main thing is never to use again the guy who did this in the first place.

You also have to think that the middle of all that foam may still be wet. It won't expand any more but the stuff is bloody horrible to remove.

Gloves and if using tools make sure you won't mind having to try and clean them afterwards.

That was a bloody stupid thing to do anyway. Trying to stop mice with foam - FFS

Foam doesn't need air to dry, its a chemical reaction, it ll be solid in the middle.

Foam (best use the window stuff, low expansion) can be used to stop rodent entry as a temporary measure or in out buildings, very effective when used with wire mesh.

but in a domestic sitting and the amounts this guy has used, nope.

Let the stuff dry, easier to remove then

@GPTec1 Is this what you’re talking about? Will this really help get rid of ALL that expanding foam? I really don’t see how.

Poison isn’t enough as this hasn’t worked for 11 months now. The reason why they need the expanding foam removed is because they’re going to mouse proof the property. They’ll be sealing all entry points along with other things so they need to see what’s behind the expanding foam

Also the foam must be dry right? It was placed there last year November

We had mice briefly.

  1. Make sure they have NO access to ANY food.
I found droppings in the toaster crumb tray......
  1. Get plug in sonar deterrents, one for each room. You can't hear a thing but the mice cleared out from our house immediately

It's fairly easy to remove when it's set but I guess your problem is going to be accessing it. I've got a garden tool for weeding the gaps on a patio that might do it.

this sort of thing but on a long handle (or taped to a broom handle!)

I'm talking with bitter experience that you cannot guarantee that the centre has solidified. Especially as it seems the bloke who used it didn't know when to stop.

It was a small comment advising the OP.

And yes, I meant expanding foam was not a good idea in a house setting.

Scienceadvisory · 14/07/2023 13:34

I second the advice to get the plug in noise deterrents. Haven't heard a single rat/mouse since I started using these.

So even though it was done in November, there’s no guarantee that the middle bit isn’t hard? Is that a good or bad thing?

I have no clue how expanding foam works, I just want it gone!

These foams cure quickly via chemical reaction, i have never known any brand of foam to not cure fully.

The Soudal stuff works, it dissolves the foam but your issue is access to it, you need to remove as much as possible first, using a knife etc.

Do you have a ground floor flat? do other nr neighbours also have a mouse problem?
