"Divorcee" title

Just been renewing various types of insurance all in the one go has got me s bit grumpy and fed up.....

Lots of picking answers from drop downs and the one that's got my back-up is "Marital status". How long after a divorce do you need to pick "divorced" before you just become "single" again?

Partly tongue in cheek as I know it's not much of a hardship in the grand scheme of things but there was a link next to each question to click on for more info and an explanation as to why they were asking the specific question. It said it needed it to do the underwriting as it could impact the rates offered and providing an inaccurate answer could invalidate the policy!!

I've been separated 12 years, officially divorced 9, been with dp 2 years (not living together). Am I still classed as "divorced"?
Also, what possible bearing can that have on pet insurance for my dog?

Is the fact I was previously married and now divorced make me a less responsible dog owner??

It’s ridiculous, isn’t it ?
I don’t like the title divorced, it somehow sounds like you’ve ‘failed’. I don’t see why we need it, straight to single !

EVHead · 14/07/2023 07:42

Yes I hate it too. I choose “divorced” because I’m honest, but I can’t see the point as it doesn’t affect my life/behaviour.

I'm not an insurance bod but maybe they've found that divorced people make more pet insurance claims?

Mumoftwoinprimary · 14/07/2023 07:48

I’ve never thought about it but - yes - that’s a bit of a weird thing.

Would you still be “divorced” at 80 from a 2 year marriage in your twenties?

What about if you move in with a partner and then split up from them? Does that make you “single” again or is it all about the ex husband?

Newgolddream70 · 14/07/2023 07:51

I hate this too OP but always choose it from the drop down. I am not defined by my marital status! Think I will choose single next time as I have been so for nearly 7 years and what's it gotta do with them anyway? Unless you get more 'points' for it when applying for credit or something 🤔 Maybe Martin Lewis knows the answer?

I did wonder this but it's the same with every type of insurance.....car, house, holiday....

Maybe we're all more irresponsible. Probably why we made such a big mistake in the first place 😂😂😂😂

I just wondered if we're now forever divorced (unless we remarry)?

But then on the other hand they might make less claims than single people who have never been married....maybe were better off with "divorced" vs "single"

It would be nice to know which is most economical especially for car insurance
when DD was a nursing student she also did care agency work and a couple of shifts in local supermarket
there were big differences in premiums depending on what she put down
i think part time retail was the cheapest

purpleme12 · 14/07/2023 09:03

I work in insurance (house) we're always told to take the information from you for what you would like us to put down for marital status.
So if you want us to put single we can put single.
If you want us to put divorced we can put that

gogomoto · 14/07/2023 09:08

Thankfully it doesn't apply to me as I live with dp but I take issue with companies wanting to to know marital status unless it's truly relevant, title gets my goat even more, why should I have to declare ms, miss or mrs when men get mr!

gogomoto · 14/07/2023 09:11

@JaceLancs

My dd is that situation, except it's down to job title - if she puts down engineer with her precise branch of engineering it's is 1/3 of the price than if she puts down military officer, her job title engineering officer isn't an option. No idea why military is so expensive for insurance
