Just that really? Obviously if it's on a non working day or they're a school it's a no.

OP posts:
momtoboys · 14/07/2023 18:25

no

5childrenand · 14/07/2023 18:27

No cos I’m a teacher so just not possible. This year it was parents evening on ds’s birthday too so I saw him for 30 mins in the morning then tucked him into bed.

mamaduckbone · 14/07/2023 18:31

I'm a teacher, so generally if I'm at work they're at school.
When they were little, I couldn't take the day off but used to try and swap PPA or leave a bit early.

Mariposista · 14/07/2023 18:35

No, because both would always be at school, or if it falls on a weekend, we would be off anyway (work M-F jobs). DH and I take each others off if we can and go for lunch or something special us two, then celebrate with kids in the evening and families at the weekend.

Sceptre86 · 14/07/2023 18:36

Yes. Eldest child's birthday often falls on the last day of term before Easter break or falls in the Easter holidays. Ds's birthday is in the summer school holidays so again I do. dd2's birthday is in term time but as she's little I do so we can do one on one stuff with her before her brother and sister get home. I'm self employed though so it's easier.

No, and honestly I think it’s absolutely bat shit behaviour. Would ANY of our parents have done this?! In my case absolutely no way, is yet another reason this Gen think they are the centre of the world.

What makes it bat shit behaviour?
I work in health care, the ward is open 24/7. If I only have to work 24 hours in the week why wouldn't I ensure that I work some of the other 144 hours of the week that also need to be covered?? On the days I work I don't see my children at all. My mum always made time to see me on my birthday

WhatADrabCarpet · 14/07/2023 18:46

No, not when they were at school.

If their birthday was during school holidays then still I wouldn't book the day off. Would celebrate at the next weekend.

I have read it all now. My children are the centre of my world. Other parents feel same about their children. The world doesn’t revolve around anyone.

Life can be very repetitive between school, work, activities etc. Sometimes it’s nice to take a day off from the routine and have some fun with your child.

Jagoda · 14/07/2023 18:51

You feeling alright @KevinDeBrioche ?

Ponderingwindow · 14/07/2023 18:52

As long as they don’t have school, yes, I take the day off.

My parents did. They felt it would be unfair that they had my birthday off every year (December 25th), whilst not doing the same for my siblings.

WeightoftheWorld · 14/07/2023 19:09

No

AnneElliott · 14/07/2023 19:25

Always. But I only have I DS! Much harder with several children.

StillWantingADog · 14/07/2023 19:27

One of mine is in august so generally yes but as part of longer time off

the other is normally at school so no though I aim to finish earlier than usual

olympicsrock · 14/07/2023 19:32

Yes to be honest, my work is more important than a birthday.
I can’t always choose when I have to work. That includes birthdays and Christmas. I don’t think that you need to spend the whole day celebrating a birthday to make the person feel special

Mammyloveswine · 14/07/2023 20:07

I'm a teacher so no 😂

NeedToBookAGetaway · 14/07/2023 20:10

Have never worked a dcs birthday. Even if they're at school as i spend the day arranging or sorting a made plan for after school.
Plus meant the mornings weren't rushed.

bladebladebla1 · 14/07/2023 20:41

Yup. For the whole of the family but there's no right or wrong to this

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 14/07/2023 20:47

Yes but largely as one is always in half term and one always in summer hols …. So I make sure I take leave then rather than it being a holiday club day.

when they were at nursery, no I didn’t. But I would pick them up earlier for a birthday tea and presents.

wholivesondrurylane · 14/07/2023 20:50

No

They're not missing school either. The younger ones who not be impressed to miss out on the chance to be the birthday child that day, and give out sweets at the end of class.

In secondary they're obviously not going to miss school for that.

ManchesterLu · 14/07/2023 20:58

If they're in school, no. If it's a weekend or school holiday, yes.

These kind of responses are so annoying. Why can't you just say you don't and that's your choice? Claiming something is batshit just because you don't do it is pointlessly aggressive

Oh the dc don't get a day off school! I just arrange not to be working. If I had a 9-5 job and would see them after work then I probably wouldn't take a day off. But it's all or nothing here 😃
