Posting here for traffic

DD is 4 and has very wavy hair, sometimes goes into ringlets. The only problem is it's quite fluffy so doesn't sit in just nice waves, it looks fluffy and a little frizzy.

I have perfectly strait hair so never had to worry about this before so I'm a bit lost

currently I always have her hair up as within two minutes of it being brushed its so fluffy that it looks really messy, like I haven't brushed it at all and looks very unkempt! Any ideas for products I could use on her hair?

There is a range in boots for kids curly hair, I forget the name by Rochelle humes that I have used as my hair is the same, coco something. I also use paradox game changer hair mask as a finishing cream and light handed, it's amazing

Sounds like my hair! I use only curls shampoo, conditioner and curl cream and it cuts out the frizz and defines the waves. At the very least try curl cream. Smooth it through dripping wet hair then scrunch the hair upwards in your palm to get a curl pattern. Don't towel dry. Use a tshirt or microfibre towel/head wrap to scrunch hair to remove excess water instead of rubbing it dry with a normal towel. Let it air dry. Or you can blow dry with a diffuser. Don't brush when dry, just finger comb. Google 'curly girl routine'
I've tried their gel on the past too, but it's not for me

I went to get a haircut by someone who specialises in curly hair a few months ago. She recommended Boucleme products and I've got on well with the yellow and pink gels which help minimise frizz (but not eradicate completely - I use the yellow bottle before pink tube on really wet hair). But, she told me that what suits some wavy / curly hair won't necessarily be suitable for others - the stylist knew just from my one visit that the products I had previously tried wouldn't suit my hair type without me even saying anything.

If she is mixed race, please watch some YouTube instructions. You can't just treat it like your own hair.

Try Cantu kids. It’s for Afro hair but useful on lots of different hair types

I have wavy hair, when I don’t use proper products it’s just a triangle of frizz. I wrap mine in a hair towel to get rid of excess water, brush when it’s wet, put curling cream + gel in it, scrunch then air dry. Don’t brush it when it’s dry!!

Brushing it when it’s dry is the worst thing you can do. Use a brush only when it’s wet to detangle and set in the parting you want and then at her age I’d just scrunch in some sort of curl creme - frizz eaze curl creme doesn’t make it too crispy and leave to dry. It’s all the brushing and faffing with frizzy hair that makes it puff up.

Check out Curly Girl Method (loads of info / videos / community online) and Marisa's account on Instagram - she has curly haired daughters too and posts lots of helpful content on looking after wavy / curly hair. Curly / wavy hair support can get over complicated quickly, but Marisa's account is straight forward and she uses lots of cheaper products, and once you get a shampoo, conditioner and styler that work that's hopefully the only 3 things you'll need (plus a diffuser attachment for hairdryer). Good luck and yey for trying to work with the curls instead of against them! X

Your daughter's hair type is different to yours, so you can't treat it or expect it to behave like straight hair, because it's not.

NEVER brush curly or wavy hair when it's dry, only when wet, and very gently with a wide-toothed comb, Denman brush or tangle teaser.

A leave-in curl cream is good, applied when the hair is soaking wet, then scrunched through with a microfibre towel or an old t shirt.

Lots of good tutorials on YouTube or TikTok - look for 'curly girl method for kids'.
