to not care if Hollywood never make another film.

Why are Hollywood strikes taking up so much news space? Would anyone really care if no more Hollywood films are ever made? Plenty of other sources make better quality films. I get that they are often fun and entertaining, but if I start watching two a week now, I am sure there are enough Hollywood films I've never seen to last me the rest of my life, anyway.

There are Hollywood Strikes?

Ducksinthebath · 13/07/2023 16:43

Maybe writers like working for Hollywood studios because they still pay better than these other films you think we should all be watching instead.

There are Hollywood Strikes?

screen writers and actors are on strike - as they have a right to be if they want to try and change their employment conditions, but I cant see why it is such a big thing on our news - there are industrial disputes the world over, many affect us more directly. I guess its because maybe we might recognise some of the names involved, but still don't think it is worthy of being a big new story.

I don't watch any films, they've all been done to death, same as books.

AnorLondo · 13/07/2023 16:50

Would anyone really care if no more Hollywood films are ever made?

Well yeah clearly, since millions of people watch films. Not to mention all the people employed in the film industry.

Calliecaterpillar · 13/07/2023 16:53

YANBU not to care

But plenty do get their entertainment from Hollywood and probably enough it's public interest and clicks on stories that keep it in the news.

Also some big names falling from grace in recent years attracts particular crowds - you have the celeb worshippers, the conspiracy theorists, the human rights activists etc just to name a few groups who might be particularly interested in what's happening in Hollywood

PuppyMonkey · 13/07/2023 16:58

I don’t think the Hollywood strikes ARE taking up a lot of news space.. are they?

i couldn’t really say if you are being unreasonable not to care if no more Hollywood films are ever made. You’re entitled to your opinion.

But … How do you know Hollywood won’t make your favourite ever movie next year? You just don’t know this yet?

NoSquirrels · 13/07/2023 17:05

It’s not just ‘Hollywood films’. It’s the studios that also produce all the TV shows you see on Netflix and Amy other streaming service.

And you should care, because they’re striking because the studios refuse to negotiate on the clause about Chat-GPT -style AI technology, which will put most humans in creative fields out of work…

Dontcallmescarface · 13/07/2023 17:13

DD has a family member (on her dad's side), who is involved in the strikes. It's wrong to say it's a "Hollywood Writers" strike as it's actually the "Writer's Guild of America" which doesn't just cover those writing for films. Many writers on T.V shows are also on strike. It has halted production on such programs as Stranger Things 2" and the final season of "A Handmaid's Tale" to name just 2.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/07/2023 17:16

Yes I would care very much as I like them.

Are you surprised that others have a different opinion from you?

snufkinhat · 13/07/2023 17:19

Well I enjoy watching movies of all kinds including Hollywood movies. So yes, I would be sad if there were never any more Hollywood movies.

I really don't think that is going to be the case, though.

Ponderingwindow · 13/07/2023 17:21

This particular strike is interesting because it’s not about pay so much as it is about the creative process and work conditions. Artificial intelligence is a big factor in the negotiations and what happens in this particular labor action may have implications for other industries.

Munchyseeds2 · 13/07/2023 17:24

The only reason I know about the strikes is because family work in the industry
I wouldn't know otherwise
I care - they lost a lot of money during Covid and now will probably lose more, they aren't writers or actors but will be affected.

LemonsOnTheMelons · 13/07/2023 17:25

Hollywood films are better than all other films, though. So yes, most people would care.

JulieHoney · 13/07/2023 17:26

It’s TV, film and radio, not just “Hollywood”.

BoohooWoohoo · 13/07/2023 17:27

I don't think it's taking up much space but I watch US TV programmes so I hope that things can be resolved.
Very understandable to want the AI clause in order to protect jobs.

45387pob · 13/07/2023 17:37

There are millions of people worldwide - designers, artists, technicians, construction, set dec, catering, makeup, special effects, drivers, etc etc. The Star Wars franchise is made at Pinewood and provides employment for thousands directly and indirectly. The next film has now been pushed back to next year due to the strikes - contracts are generally freelance so loads are now out of work.

Gladiator II is being filmed in Morocco and Malta, again hundreds of crew now on a hiatus. The big studios make films all over the world, not just USA and contribute millions to the GDP of the countries they work in.

I agree the writers need to take action against the rise of AI, but the knock on effects will be huge for those in the industry.

MrsAlgernon · 13/07/2023 17:40

I have never heard of the issue.

Re: Hollywood, not just you - I'm not interested in another $1bn blockbuster of robots punching their heads out and the amount of BS that comes from Hollywood just gives me Ricky Gervais mood at the Golden Globes.

I've enjoyed HBO channel series in the past though. Netflix not so much but occasional gems.

Guess the writers have grievance for a reason.

WithinReasonOfCourse · 14/07/2023 00:13

My partner works in the UK film industry - crew not actors or writers. So many projects have now been delayed due to the strikes there is a real scarcity of work available. As a PP said, this is an industry whose members were also badly affected by covid ( Albeit briefly tbf, the industry got insanely busy outside of the period of lockdowns due to a demand for content.)
In 2020, the UK film industry supported 86,000 jobs, of which 75% worked in movie production and distribution. The film, television, and video sectors contributed £12.6 billion to the UK economy in 2019. So that's an awful lot of people now struggling to find work, and a blow to the economy as a whole. There really are reasons to care.

Ahsoka2001 · 14/07/2023 00:15

Considering I'm not only a film fanatic but have also just got a job in a cinema (and therefore rely on new releases to pay rent and not starve) yes I would mind

HowAmYa · 14/07/2023 08:51

Because....jobs? It affects so many people and their livelihoods. Just because it doesn't serve a necessity like the NHS doesn't mean its not important to those who work within this industry.

I think most of us survived on Hollywood during the pandemic!

JulieHoney · 14/07/2023 13:13

If you’re not bothered about AI and generated content, I suggest you watch the first episode of this season of Black Mirror.

shivawn · 14/07/2023 13:16

Yes I care of course, it's delayed the new seasons of some tv shows that I really enjoy. It's not all about big Hollywood blockbusters although there's obviously plenty of people that enjoy them too.
