Our landlord decided to sell the house and give us notice two months before our baby was due. We've applied for numerous rentals in the area - area is important to us as our eldest is autistic and needs provision at school. We're also registered with the council and bid every week.
Our housing officer contacted us when I came out of hospital and she managed to convince the landlord to give us an extra three months.
We have less than a month before the council finds us temporary accommodation and I went to view a property this week. It's a 2-bed new build with a patio garden, 2 bathrooms, and a fair sized kitchen. It's well within our budget and close to DS' school. DH says it's too small and not worth the price. Just to give you some perspective, it's £100 more than the rented house we lived in two years ago and is considerably smaller with one less bedroom and less storage. BUT, rentals have sky rocketed and it's well within current market value.
I would prefer to live in social housing but this house is let by the same agency we're currently renting with, who know our situation, our landlord, and housing officer. I don't think our housing officer will be too impressed if we refuse an offer (especially as they offered to pay our bond). They're still processing applications but DH doesn't want to live there as he'd have to "get rid of too much stuff".
By stuff, I mean gaming equipment, old books from uni, football cards, Pokemon cards and plushies, vintage slides and camera equipment, golf clubs and fishing rods, etc. We currently live in a 3-bed house and his stuff takes up an entire double room. We CANNOT currently afford another 3-bed and even if we could the boys should have a bedroom each.
DH hasn't packed or attempted to empty his car. He won't change his annual leave because apparently he has to have the same time off every year. He's decided he doesn't want to live in a flat (fair enough but the council might not give us a choice). I've started exploring other schools with an LRC unit, but DH isn't interested and doesn't want to bid for houses outside the area.
There's only one other house he's interested in which has three bedrooms and a very small dining room - so there's room for his stuff. There's no garden though and we have two kids in nappies. I'm gutted because I'd love a garden, especially with the summer holidays coming up. Unfortunately, I have no say because I'm out of work and my application is worthless.
