Would you send DC to school?

DC had a fever in the middle of the night but was fine with ibuprofen. Now seems totally fine. Would you keep them at home or send them in?

Give them another dose but send them in.

Mexicansky · 13/07/2023 07:11

What was their temp? Just a temp or any other symptoms?

Wddre · 13/07/2023 07:15

I didn't measure it but they were burning up at around 11pm. No other obvious symptom though had complained of a tummy ache earlier in the day.

Fever is the body’s way of fighting an infection. Please keep them off; it’s the end of term nearly and people have plans. It’s likely many of his classmates will be going straight on their holidays. Why would you send him in? Calpol / Nurofen just masks the temperature .

Hope he is feeling better soon.

Wddre · 13/07/2023 07:16

The point is he is totally fine this morning. No symptoms at all. Would have absolutely kept him at home if he had but he seems totally fine.

I’d keep them off. Obviously something is going on in their body so let them rest and avoid spreading it to others, especially before holidays. Hope they’re ok.

Temporaryname158 · 13/07/2023 07:20

I’d send them in. They are well now with no temperature. If you keep them off for every little thing they will never be there!

Oysterbabe · 13/07/2023 07:22

I'd send them in because I have to work and can't afford a day off to look after a well child. It's enough of a struggle covering the upcoming holidays.

LoveBluey · 13/07/2023 07:22

If they hadn't actually vomited then yes I would send them in. If they have no symptoms this morning then seems like they've likely slept it off.

LoveBluey · 13/07/2023 07:24

I do wonder if answers will be split by working parents/non working parents.

I work from home so if my child was poorly I could fairly easily have her home on the sofa watching tv / sleeping but a perfectly well child that would be full of energy and constantly saying I'm bored is a different matter and I'd be sending her to school.

RedDirtMud · 13/07/2023 07:24

I’d keep him off.

marcopront · 13/07/2023 07:26

How long ago did you give ibuprofen?
Could it still be working?

Wddre · 13/07/2023 07:27

Gave him medicine at 11pm so I think it would have worn off by now. I do have to work and yes the prospect of having to entertain a well child at home does not appeal

Did it disturb his sleep? If he's been tossing and turning with a fever, he might be too tired for a busy day at school.

I would send him then

hoophoophooray · 13/07/2023 07:34

My usual tactic for this is to send in, but try and collect after school rather that the usual wraparound in case they are still a bit tired.

MuggleMe · 13/07/2023 07:35

I'd send in but warn teacher and make it clear if he's not well I'm at home and happy to get a call to collect.

SummerSunSoon · 13/07/2023 07:42

I’d keep him home as he probably has an infection. It’s not fair on others, as a pp said, it could mess up people’s holidays.

Mexicansky · 13/07/2023 07:54

I had this same situation with my DC last week. Sent him in half expecting school to ring and he was absolutely fine. Nothing else materialised!

Heckythump1 · 13/07/2023 07:56

I would send him in for sure! They will soon send him home if anything changes.
My girls have had random temperatures loads of times and been perfectly fine within hours.

HollyBookBlue · 13/07/2023 08:26

If he was infectious, he's likely to have been most infectious yesterday, so I wouldn't keep him off school today to protect others. If his fever's broken, and he's feeling well then he's over it. Send him to school

JenniferBarkley · 13/07/2023 08:37

We've had this a few times - fever at bedtime, expecting to be home with a sick child the next day and then they bound out of bed in great form. I'd send him in, he's feeling well and doesn't have a fever.

nasanas · 13/07/2023 08:38

What made you check their temp at 11pm? There must have been some sign of unwell?

ChickenBurgers · 13/07/2023 08:39

I would send them in. My middle son is prone to randomly spiking a temperature for seemingly no reason and then being absolutely fine 12 hours later with no signs of illness and then is fine. It happens sometimes.

Don’t do this. It’s your choice as a parent whether he’s well enough to go in. Don’t put that onto the teacher. If he’s ill at school, the school will follow their procedures about whether to send him home or not.
