Posting here for traffic as my DS ( who by the way had the best semester in Liverpool ( a uni exchange) for those who remember that thread - and got a tattoo to remember it by with about 30 other students) , is now in Spain and not feeling great. Has had a cough that has settled on his chest for a few weeks ans msgd me he needs to see a doctor. He never goes to the doctor so must be bad.
All I need to know is what does he ask for ?
Like the equivalent of a GP in Spain. I have no idea. He has travel insurance ( I think) but nevermind I'll pay for him to see a doctor just not sure how to get it sorted and he isn't either. He's been overseas since January ( he's 22) and this is the first time he has sounded a bit lost so would love to help him out. Thanks

He is probably better going to a pharmacy first of all. Much easier over there to get fairly decent medication OTC. Other than that he will have to go a medical centre. If he doesn't have insurance then this won't work. If he doesn't there are plenty of private little health clinics everywhere in tourist resorts where he can walk in and pay cash. Often called odd things like Scandicare or Medihelp.

liveforsummer · 12/07/2023 17:33

People in Spain will understand him asking for a doctor. If he's on a tourist area though clinics will be obvious and he can just walk in. They will speak English. A pharmacy will be able to help advise if not

Loooper · 12/07/2023 17:36

If he needs to see a doctor he should go to an ‘ambulatorio’ or ‘ centro médico’. Does he have an EHIC card? I think with that he can use the public healthcare system.

marmaladeslade · 12/07/2023 17:37

Ta. Yes he's been to the chemists, just not getting better. He thinks he needs antibiotics ( this is a boy who never gets sick so I believe him).
Scandicare and Medihelp. I will pass those on thanks.

Thanks. No card. He's Australian , but has been living in England for the past 6 months studying

These were just random examples of what sort of names the clinics have. The clinics will be very obvious. Signage is very easy to understand and someone will be able to point him in the right direction. I suggest he visits a pharmacy in a tourist area where they will speak English if his Spanish isn't up to it.

There are usually lots of medical centres in tourist hotpots in Spain and the balaerics.

We recently had to call out a doctor on our recent trip in May for DD. We just googled it and a doctor came out within 30 mins at 3am although we did have to pay 180euros for the pleasure!

Where in Spain? If it's near a place with some hotels, he could ask at reception who they call when guests are ill.

Maray1967 · 12/07/2023 17:44

Hope he gets the care he needs.

Great to hear he had a brilliant semester here in Liverpool.

Ta . I've passed that on.
He's a clever lad . It's just that he always says "I'll be right" - and he normally is - so for him to think he needs antibiotics makes me worry a wee bit. I've told him I'll be cross of he gets pneumonia!!!!

San Sabastien. I presume a hostel. I told him to ask the reception. He is on his way there at the moment on a bus. It's 3 am here in Australia so not sure what I can actually do except find out some info for him for when he arrives; and mumsnet seems to be the hub of all knowledge!
First time he has sounded like he needed me.

OMG. He can't stop raving about the place. Calls it his second home now - you might be stuck with him ( I'm worried he will be back - noooooooo he's mine) anyway as I said about 30 of them got these tattoos on their ankles of the Liverpool bird ( can't remember the name sorry) but when he tilts his leg it looks like a wave so he thinks it is a symbol of his two homes . NOrthern Beaches NSW Australia and Liverpool. He so loved it and made so many friends ( for life I think) . Extra special as these were the uni cohort that basically missed out on uni ( due to COVID) so it was all online. Not really the same. So they made up for it!. Ta to Liverpool from me for looking after my boy and showing him such a great time.

I was on holiday in Spain a few months ago and wasn't well. I paid for a 10 minute phone consultation with an English speaking Dr who called me back and emailed me a prescription for an antibiotic. It cost €29 for the phonecall and the script came to my phone in minutes. I'll see if I can find the link.

Oh thanks. . He should be at the hostel in the next hour and I though I could just msg him some helpful info. As I say , I'm not much use here in OZ at 3 am. Is Wimbledon on? I could watch that whilst I wait.

Kids - no matter how old they always get sick in the middle of the night!!!
Even when they are on the other side of the world.

Ah my Internet is so slow that I can't link the place properly. If he Google Nerja Medical Centre there is a link to book a phone consultation. Saved my skin. I suspected I had mastitis though, and the Dr agreed based on my symptoms so for me it was quick and easy.

marmaladeslade · 12/07/2023 18:13

Nerja Medical centre - got it. Thanks

Liver bird - mythical bird possibly based on a sea cormorant. Symbol of Liverpool and seen on the towers of the Liver building on the waterfront. I’m sure he’s welcome back any time!

Hope he enjoys Spain once he’s well.
