Would you expect to be paid for this?

I have a new job offer, there's a 5 day in- house training requirement. Would you expect to be paid for this? I'm essentially having to take a week off work (unpaid) to do this training.
Aibu to think we should be paid for this training? I am part of an agency which requests 1 training day which is unpaid.
1, ok, but 5.
I'm actually considering withdrawing from the position if this isn't paid.

It's 9-3 each day. So it's almost a full time week

I've never had to complete unpaid training. YANBU to find this off-putting.

Peacoffee · 12/07/2023 14:15

Have they said it is unpaid?
I've never heard of a job that required a week unpaid full time training.
Sounds like a scam.

HopelessEstateAgents · 12/07/2023 14:15

Yes. What they are asking is illegal

BravoMyDear · 12/07/2023 14:16

I absolutely would, yes! And if I wasn’t be paid for it I would reconsidering the job offer.

YeCannaeChangeTheLawsOfPhysics · 12/07/2023 14:16

Yes you should be paid at your normal rate.

Iwishthaticouldbelikethecoolkids · 12/07/2023 14:17

Hi, quick update, so I've just found out it's paid. However I won't get the pay for what's likely another 4 months. Ah well, at least it's paid I guess. Thanks for your replies.

Of course you should be paid, especially as it's in-house.

Toniii · 12/07/2023 14:32

4 months until they pay it? Are they even a real company?

RebelR · 12/07/2023 14:34

Absolutely you need to be paid. I wouldn't be accepting a job where it wasn't.

Both my DSs have recently taken PT minimum wage jobs (different employers) where there was some online training required before they started. Both were paid for the time without asking.

Peacoffee · 12/07/2023 14:35

Why is it not paid until 4 months later? Do they have some clause that if you don't pass probation they don't pay the training?
Again sounds like a scam.

So they don't pay you for the training unless/until you pass probation?

Who are these charlatans?

Iwishthaticouldbelikethecoolkids · 12/07/2023 14:36

I need to pass probation before I'm paid apparently (for this training) and I won't be properly starting for a few weeks until my DBS comes through.
I've been expected to do e learning for free in previous companies. I agree it should be paid.

It's a healthcare company, don't want to name them, but I admit I've never heard of this before so I will do some investigation.

DS2 has been working for the NHS bank for the past 10 months whilst waiting to go to uni. He also didn't get his weeks training paid for until 3 months later. They told him it was to stop people doing the training (and costing them money) and then leaving before they started the actual job. Maybe it's similar?

Toniii · 12/07/2023 14:47

As I was reading it I knew it would be health care.....I can understand it to stop you training at a cost and then leaving, but I still don't think it's legal!

That must still surely be illegal? They haven't paid an average of minimum wage (unless the overall salary is very high) for time worked. Even if they do leave after a few weeks, they're still entitled to be paid for what they've done.

Maybe. I don't really know enough about it but I thought it sounded like a similar scenario to the OP.

Poppyblush · 12/07/2023 15:22

This sounds very dodgy.

Equalitea · 12/07/2023 21:13

I’ve never been asked to do unpaid training!
