Anybody up, normal or not, some retraction breathing with croup

DS 4 has what I suspect is croup (had it a few times before). He has asthma and takes daily steroid inhalers and montelukast tablets which have been really helping control it lately.
Tonight he is coughing away quite a lot, I've only got an adult oximeter but when using it it does show 95 which is says is within range for his age. However I've just been watching him and when he's breathing he's pulling in in the middle bit of his chest and his neck is pulling in a bit too. Neither are as bad as some of the videos I've just looked up online though.
He has no blueness or anything like that. Is this an emergency job or something we can ride out until the morning and see the Gp? I should add he has not temp or anything with it.

I'd suggest trying to contact wherever he was seen last night (A&E, paediatric ward or similar) and tell them he's not improving and, crucially, that this is despite him now being medicated.

Were you given 24 hours open access to a ward or similar? Our local paediatric ward does this and it saves a lot of hassle.

You can get rebound from the steroids. I would call 111 at the very least.
My son’s last croup episode rebounded 12 h after adrenaline. He was given steroids during the day and was fine but rebounded again at night. In retrospect he should have been given adrenaline instead of steroids and admitted.
He’s also developed bronchitis after croup and ended up with breathing difficulties from that the day after a croup attack.
Unfortunately with atypical croup you can’t assume it will improve.

Put the kettle on in his room to moisten the air with steam. GP told me to do that when my little one had bad croup.

This is outdated. You need cold air, not hot. We often are told by the telephone operator to sit in front of the open freezer while waiting for the ambulance

How is he doing now?

hoobalula · 12/07/2023 21:34

Cough is absolutely terrible now, almost making him sick. Just managed to get him in to bed and although he's propped up on pillows it's making no difference. Although the dr gave him steroids today she seemed pretty unconcerned which made me worry I'm over reacting but he's just not any better than he was last night even though he's had the medicine

You're not overreacting. Sorry to hear he's no better. Honestly I'd be taking him off to A&E now.

Hey, been in your position with my DS, he’s 4 and at the start of this year we were the exact same, mines had 6 courses of steroids within 3 months, two hospital admissions, but doesn’t have asthma (viral wheeze apparently) if you don’t see the steroids making a difference within 12hrs I’d go straight to A+E, sometimes gps work off a set of guidelines with kids breathing and there not always right! Speaking from experience …
My GP almost sent us away until my son fell asleep in the room and his oxygen dropped to 85.. yes 85! Needless to say he wanted us whisked to a+e asap!
my DS needed nebulisers in hospital in order to bring his rate of work back down, course after course of steroids did nothing, within 30 mins of nebulisers he had colour back and was a different kid!

we were prescribed montelukast 2 months ago and had HORRIFIC behavioural side effects, thankfully we were aware and stopped it imminently

good luck x

My son 4 has asthma and last year had the same thing, he ended up having to be admitted for couple of days but it was the best thing for him. He had steroids and nebuliser, I personally would take him back he probably needs more help. Hope he turns a corner x
