Offered to buy DH a MacBook and he's annoyed

CelTa · 11/07/2023 18:45

I offered to buy my DH a new MacBook - he's had his current one for 10 years and it's a bit slow.

My budget is £1250 and there are plenty of MacBooks online for this price.

We've just had an argument because he wants a better one at £1600.

He had no intention of buying it for himself and can't afford it. I came into some money recently and wanted to do something nice for him. I feel like it's just been thrown back in my face. He's always complaining about his laptop and how slow it is.

Aibu?

Interestingly, me and DH had this same conversation a couple of days ago!
I will soon be receiving an inheritance from my mums estate. Over 20K. I asked him if there was anything he would like me to buy him and he said he’d like a new MacBook to replace his 10 year old one. I will buy him the one he wants. He helped me a lot with my mum, he split his inheritance from his mum with me 50/50.

Will you be splitting your inheritance 50/50 with him?

Msplace · 11/07/2023 21:59

I've just seen your update. he thinks the less expensive model isn't as safe as the more expensive one and doesnt want to his bank account to become vulnerable. So this is just a misunderstanding. I wouldn't say he was ungreatful. Maybe he can speak to someone who works at apple to talk about his worries. They can then say if the laptop is as safe or not and then maybe he will be ok with it

What sort of question is that?

What are you struggling with?

DrSbaitso · 11/07/2023 23:14

luckylavender · 11/07/2023 20:59

@DrSbaitso - the OP said he can't afford it. Not everyone has a spare few hundred.

The OP is unclear about whether he can't afford the whole thing or he can't afford to make up the difference. The context suggests the former but I can't be sure.

Perhaps he can't afford the difference, in which case that's the answer to my question.

Does that explain things for you?

Cirice · 11/07/2023 23:18

If by security he means he’s after the one with the taskbar and fingerprint recognition it ain’t all that.
I paid extra for mine, I find it gimmicky and more often than now I have to restart the taskbar as it won’t display my emojis.

that aside, does he have any redeeming features?

slowsundays · 11/07/2023 23:25

If he wants security, this one has Touch ID (it's the one I have and it's brilliant) and it's in budget.

He doesn't need any specifics - he's not a photographer or a gamer.

He uses his laptop for checking emails and watching YouTube videos.

His main argument is that he wants "security." Which in my experience is software, not hardware.

He is not working for Mi5, he just wants his bank accounts to be secure. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The £1250 one is exactly as secure as the £1600 one.

Grumpy101 · 12/07/2023 02:17

YABU. My ex bought me a Mac years ago. I needed one but the one he got me was shite. And then we had no money to buy me the laptop I wanted and needed for years after that. I still have that Mac in a drawer and it's just a reminder of what a twat my ex really was. Don't buy something just for the sake of it, it's shit.

UpaladderwatchingTV · 11/07/2023 21:32

I'm literally viewing this thread on a brand new MacBook that I bought today. It cost me less than £1,000, has an M2 processor, and is absolutely fabulous! Tell him he's an ungrateful git, and buy yourself a new MacBook, so he can watch you using yours, see how fast it is, etc., and then see him turn green!!

@UpaladderwatchingTV how did you get it for under £1k

FictionalCharacter · 12/07/2023 02:57

TeeBee · 11/07/2023 18:48

Cheeky bastard. In that case, I'd just say 'okay, never mind, I'll now use the money for something else'. And make sure you do exactly that.

Yep. And when he moans about the old one, ignore.

echt · 12/07/2023 03:20

OP, you say he wouldn't have bought the more expensive one and can't afford it. Do you actually mean he wouldn't have bought it because he can't afford it?

FFS offer him the more expensive and one and say he makes up the difference. If he's got 10 years out of the last one, he takes care of his devices.

FictionalCharacter · 12/07/2023 03:33

HogwartsChessChampion · 12/07/2023 01:44

The £1250 one is exactly as secure as the £1600 one.

Indeed. He clearly doesn’t understand security. Besides, his bank account should be secured by username, password and authentication, so that even if the computer is accessible to someone else his bank account isn’t. Unless he’s the kind of plank who writes his passwords down in a Word document and puts it on the desktop.

Baisksomwms · 12/07/2023 03:43

He does sound ungrateful and ignorant to boot - but why isn't it family money?

user1492757084 · 12/07/2023 04:27

Forget about the sod.
He could have coughed up the extra 400 but instead felt agrieved. Leave him to use the public library.

Shoxfordian · 12/07/2023 05:09

He’s being ungrateful as he only wants it for YouTube and emails; the security on them is the same.

rwalker · 12/07/2023 05:37

Sounds like it’s been worded incredibly wrong
but I’d sooner make do with what I’ve got than make do with something I don’t want

whilst it’s a massive amount of money when you break it down to something you’ve use everyday for 10years it’s good value

I'd offer £1250 towards what ever he wants

also look at apple website they do refurbished laptops full warranty I’ve had 2 no problems you’d never know there not new massive saving

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 12/07/2023 05:58

Buy him a pair of socks instead. 😁

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 12/07/2023 06:04

If he doesn't have £350 to make up the difference why is he so worried about the security of his bank account?

I don't suppose hackers are going to go all out for £349, he sounds like a child wanting the most expensive toy in the shop

ColdHandsHotHead · 12/07/2023 06:28

Jigslaw · 11/07/2023 18:53

It is a wonderful offer but similarly there isn't much point getting on with lesser specs than you need. Sure it's better than not having a new one at all, but it's still a bit of a waste of all of that money if it's not what you need- its one of those things I think where the giving is for the joy of the giver even if the reciever doesn't want it. Just take back the offer and he can save up if he so wishes.

Who says he needs the better spec?

So, if he split his inheritance with you 50:50, why aren't you splitting yours with him rather than just buying him a gift?

Timeisallwehave · 12/07/2023 06:32

My dh once bought me a MacBook which I also reacted badly to for my birthday. It was under spec, despite being brand new it couldn’t install properly because the storage was too small for the amount of data I had.

I complained, he wasn’t too happy that I did. Ended up selling it after a short time when he agreed it was unusable, couldn’t update it due to lack of storage. Bought a new one.

So on this occasion, I agreed with him. Although I accept it’s a really difficult thing to bring up without upsetting the gifting person.

00100001 · 12/07/2023 06:43

Lol, get him to explain why a £1600 MacBook is more secure than a £1200 one.... Tell us what he says 😂😂😂😂😂😂

He'll get better security anyway with a MacBook, they don't get more secure the more expensive they are.

RedRobyn2021 · 12/07/2023 07:23

That is so expensive, I know their stuff it beautiful but if he's using it just for YouTube and emails can't he just have an iPad?

Either way, this is an embarrassing way for a grown man to behave.
