To wonder if an autism diagnosis will stop my daughter going into nursing

Nursing is all my daughter has ever wanted to do and she’d be good at it. Do you have to declare an autism diagnosis and would it go against her? In theory I know it absolutely shouldn’t but we have sadly experienced the reality as regards autism understanding in the NHS and education.

Autistic kid, now adult, over the way is a nurse. But it depends on your kid I suppose.

If she's capable of gaining the necessary qualifications, then I can't see any reason why she wouldn't at least be given the chance to use them in practice. If there are difficulties, then it's normal to make allowances for someone with a disability provided they can still discharge the basic duties of their post. There is theoretically no reason whatsoever why someone with Autism couldn't pursue any career they choose.

I'm not a nurse but a different healthcare professional (registered). I know people that I trained with who are autistic. I have also had multiple colleagues with autism. One of them delivers training on it which is always well received. In my experience in the NHS colleagues and managers are keen to support people with autism.

I know loads of autistic nurses. It can be a bit of a bonus in the right speciality, some I know are thriving at band 8!

No, you don’t have to declare autism when applying for jobs (or for anything else)! It is down to the individual to decide whether they wants to declare it.
