Gift voucher - cheeky?

Seriouslydodgyname · 11/07/2023 17:32

Bring deliberately obscure:

I've have been tasked with collating the funds for a group gift. The group had already decided on the gift prior to me being tasked with organising it.

It's a gift voucher for something quite niche, but that we know the recipient definitely wants. I have a gift voucher for that place that I will not use.

My gift voucher is £80 and the total pot for the gift is £150.

WIBU if I used the gift voucher I have and top it up to the £150? I've already contributed to the pot, so I'm not trying to get out of giving money.

YABU - it would be cheeky and inappropriate to do this

YANBU - seems totally fair, you aren't depriving anybody of money/ a gift

FWIW - the gift voucher is paper tokens of varying amounts, not a credit card, do won't look odd if I add to it.

So long as the expiry date on them isn’t really short I would! Just don’t say anything.

TooBored1 · 11/07/2023 17:34

Does your voucher have an expiry date?

Stichintime · 11/07/2023 17:35

Depends on who the group is. Work, no, family or friends probably.

Takeovermylife · 11/07/2023 17:35

Are you collecting for a school teacher by any chance?

BellaJuno · 11/07/2023 17:36

I’m a bit confused by your post but if you’re giving YOUR vouchers as part of the gift, that’s cheeky. If you’re using your vouchers instead of the cash you’ve collected to buy the gift, that’s fine. To be honest, it’s not your decision to make though so you should ask the people who’ve contributed what they think.

Curseofthenation · 11/07/2023 17:37

Agree with the others, it depends how long you've had the voucher and the expiry date. It could be really obvious that it has been regifted as you'll need a second voucher.

Kingsparkle · 11/07/2023 17:38

Agree with others, my only thought was to expiry dates. If that’s not an issue I don’t see why there should be a problem although I am sure someone will come up with one.

Seriouslydodgyname · 11/07/2023 17:43

To answer some questions:

  • no, not a school teacher
  • no expiry dates
  • they'll already be multiple vouchers, as it's bits of paper with £50, £20, £10 on etc.
OP posts:
drpet49 · 11/07/2023 17:45

I don’t see the problem as there is no expiry date.

Then go for it. - if there's no expiry date you might as well!

Cyllie33 · 11/07/2023 17:51

Gosh, I don’t know. You mean you’ll pocket £80 of the collection and put the voucher you already have towards the total voucher?

I know that doesn’t impact on what people gave and what the recepient receives but it does feel a bit….off? I think because you’re technically profiting from the collection maybe. If you’re not going to use the voucher and it was given to you, I think I would just add it to bump up the gift amount and not expect payment for it. Or maybe go halves.

AbacusAvocado · 11/07/2023 17:53

I’d do it. Hurts nobody. Doesn’t affect anybody. You get cash. It’s all good.

I'll probably sell it. They sell quite well.

If the gift voucher is in pristine condition with no expiry date then go for it!

Its not profiteering.

Kingsparkle · 11/07/2023 18:06

I’d do it OP. No one loses out and you being tasked with it sounds like organising it was foist upon you, so if this makes your life a bit easier without affecting anyone else then why not.

Kingsparkle · 11/07/2023 18:07

The suggestion to just add your £80 vouchers to the collection did make me raise an eyebrow. Why should OP lose out on an £80 gift?

Dacadactyl · 11/07/2023 18:07

I wouldn't. I think it's a bit off too.

Zanatdy · 11/07/2023 18:08

Don’t see anything wrong with that

londonrach · 11/07/2023 18:11

Tbh I can't believe people think this ok. Op opens herself up here to potential problems. Would the new voucher s have different numbers...like a bar code as it show it bought at a different time.

Kingsparkle · 11/07/2023 18:19

I really don’t get the angst. If they are all equally valid in the shop with the same expiry date then what does it matter? Who is analysing the serial numbers of the gift vouchers they’ve been given??

changeyerheadworzel · 11/07/2023 18:24

Technically when I read it all seems reasonable but when I think about it it seems morally wrong.

Cyllie33 · 11/07/2023 18:25

Seriouslydodgyname · 11/07/2023 17:58

I'll probably sell it. They sell quite well.

Yes, I’d just sell it and keep the two things separate.

I think otherwise there’s the possibility of things feeling blurred/people who’ve contributed finfing out and getting the wrong end of the stick/getting pissed off

purser25 · 11/07/2023 18:26

Are they theatre tokens? Good to have some in small amounts

I didn’t say she should - was just a thought as I’ve given away unwanted gifts before - I think most people probably have 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bloodyleaverspartybollocks · 11/07/2023 19:57

If there is definitely no expiry then I'd do it
