Car insurance hike - is this just the norm now?

Ok I get it everything is going up and we're all paying more for everything but I got my car insurance renewal through and it's gone up by 50%!!
Im older, got years and years of driving experience and no claims, loyal customer with other policies with the same company. Nothing has changed, nothing apart from another years no claims.
Company will not budge AT ALL on the renewal price.
Anyone else seeing the same? Aibu to think insurance companies are just jumping on the bandwagon? 😖

I’ve heard others say similar. My friend’s has gone up by £200, and people at work were discussing it

We’ve had to claim this year … ours is up for renewal next month and I honestly dread to think if the above is without a claim!! We’re all screwed

Coronationstation · 11/07/2023 17:28

Yep, same happened to me and a friend recently. Both up by about 50% on last year with no chance in car or circumstances and no claims. Couldn’t find cheaper even by shopping around.

amusedbush · 11/07/2023 17:29

I renewed in March and was expecting to haggle it down (like always) but I was wrong. It wasn't a huge amount more than the previous year - maybe £50 for the year - but it bloody well stung, considering I was expecting it to go down by about £100!

I phoned three times and they wouldn't budge but I ended up renewing with them anyway because every alternative insurer gave me the same price or higher. Like you, I'm not a new driver and I have several years of NCD.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 11/07/2023 17:33

Mine went from 650 ish to 1250. Needless to say I shopped around and got it to 800. I've been drinking 32 years and have full no claims. To be fair we have a high end car but doubled insurance was a bloody piss take.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 11/07/2023 17:34

Ha ha driving not drinking. (But equally that is true...)

TippledPink · 11/07/2023 17:34

Hopefully not drinking and driving that whole 32 years 😂😂

Goldenboysmum · 11/07/2023 17:43

Mine went this year, only by about £26, and was still over £80 cheaper than than the cheapest on a comparison site.

I'm with RAC, for the 3rd year running.

Daisywishes · 11/07/2023 17:45

Reading these makes me so scared to renew given that we’ve claimed as well. We were paying £115 a month this year for two cars. DH only had his licence a couple of years and I am under 25 so probably factors that won’t go in our favour as well!!!! Aghhh worried we won’t afford it.

Goldenboysmum · 11/07/2023 17:45

Sorry it was only £18 cheaper than last year, but still cheaper.

MintJulia · 11/07/2023 17:45

Mine's gone from £280 to £500. I've had a shop around and that really is the least expensive I can find.

Honestly, I have maximum no claims and a squeaky clean licence, so can't see what the problem is. It's very depressing.

ghostyslovesheets · 11/07/2023 17:49

I shopped around and went for their proposed £56 a month (up from £40 to £29 with Tesco - worth doing

53 - no points, no accidents 10+ years no claims - seemed mad it was so high

pointythings · 11/07/2023 17:52

Mine tried to sting me for a 35% increase. I shopped around and got more cover (added business use and extra miles as I am now regularly commuting to the office) for a less than 5% increase. I'm 55, have 18 years claim free, no changes in circumstances. I get that costs have gone up, but I reckon there is also some piss taking going on.

onthefence23 · 11/07/2023 17:59

Mine was fine in June? Renewal quote was up (but isn't it always) shopped around and got one below 350 - down from 430 quoted by existing company

OldBeller · 11/07/2023 18:03

Ah, is everyone having the same? I was absolutely baffled as to why mine had gone up so much.

I had a serious accident years back now, but it's gone down steadily every year. No claims made and it's kept parked in a very safe location. Until this year when it jumped back up to about £400 more than I was expecting.

Ouch.

Hepherlous · 11/07/2023 18:15

Mine has gone from £360 to £720 - renewed last week. 15 years no claims. No points etc. no changes at all in 12 months. Bonkers

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 11/07/2023 18:22

I always remember when I was in my late teens, being told that my insurance would obviously be buttock-clenchingly expensive, but not to worry as it would start falling significantly from 25, then still more from 30, then when I was over 40, it would seem almost laughably cheaper.

Mid-40s now (no claims) and it still hasn't happened.

CatsOnTheChair · 11/07/2023 18:27

Dump your details into a comparison website. See what it churns out. I have been pleasantly surprised this year. Despite a (none fault) claim, my premium has only gone up £25, and the comparison website can't beat my renewal cost. I can't remember the last time I stayed with an insurance company on renewal! House insurance - with no claims - has gone DOWN - and again the comparison website can't beat it.

RausageSoul · 11/07/2023 18:29

Feel slightly relieved it's not just me, but same!! In my 40s 15 yrs no claim, no change...

Last year paid £274
Renewal £369

Price comparison sites were throwing up cheaper prices for companies I've never heard of or want a tracker.

Direct line £600!

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 11/07/2023 18:30

Mine went up 60% with absolutely no justification. Couldn't find anyone cheaper despite clean licence, decent no claims and no change to my car. I was - and am- fuming.

EnthENd · 11/07/2023 18:33

My renewal's not til November but I've been hearing stories of huge hikes in Birmingham (which is already very expensive).

Every company that touches an insurance claim charges rip-off rates to the insurer and I suppose that's feeding back now.

Timeforchangeithink · 11/07/2023 18:35

I had mine on auto renewal and price gone up over £100. Cancelled autorenewal surprise surprise £40 reduction offered. Still cancelled. Went through Quidco - after cashback got it for £10 more a year. I change every year.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 11/07/2023 18:36

Mine went up a lot. I used a price comparison website to get cheaper quotes. Phoned to cancel and they brought the price down considerably.

RhubarbAndMustard · 11/07/2023 18:39

It's rising cost of inflation, any repair work has now gone up, parts harder to come by which then makes claims last longer/need for hire car longer etc.
There's been a few insurers pulling out of car insurance market recently as a result.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 11/07/2023 18:41

Yes, I'm always uneasy by a company I've never heard of - especially when they have a silly childish name that sounds like they insure Wile E. Coyote!

I also refuse on principle to have a black box at my age. They're always sold as a way for young, inexperienced drivers to build up proof of being a responsible driver; when you're middle-aged with a long record of safety and no claims, I find it insulting to suggest that I should need one - it's the car insurance equivalent of having to ask your mum for permission to stay out until midnight.... in my 40s?!?!

HundredMilesAnHour · 11/07/2023 18:42

Mine renews at the end of this month and is going from £480 to £610. 😡

No change in circumstances whatsoever. Maximum no claims. That's central London (kept off road in a secure gated development). 8 year old sports car. The cliched one careful lady driver from new. I'm early 50s.
