Horrible interview - I didn't get the job did I?

Had an interview for a job this morning. They asked me to bring along any relevant convictions along with a letter detailing and explaining the situation regarding these in a sealed envelope which I did.

I have two convictions from 12 years ago. These have never stopped me getting a job with vulnerable adults or children and I was completely honest about these. Haven't been in trouble since.

When I walked into the room I was surprised to see one of the interviewers with my conviction declaration sitting on her desk.

She said hello then said I see you have convictions, is there anything else you would like to share? I replied that there wasn't. She said nothing else outstanding or pending? I replied no. And then she said and these are in the past yes? I responded yes.

The interview went well I thought. However at the end she said, I will contact you tomorrow afternoon whether you've been successful or not but if you apply for a job with this council in the future can I just recommend that you (and gave me advice on my application). I just said yes thank you and left.

Also as I was waiting on interview another candidate came out and was given paperwork to complete after her interview. I wasn't given any paper work at the end.

It doesn't look good does it? I wasn't aware that interviewers were allowed to see convictions due in to the risk of bias?

Oh goodness, OP. I'm sorry you had a bad interview. It sounds as if you were interviewed by some very inept and unskilled people who really ought to be doing something else. I'm not surprised that it's a council as they generally are exceedingly risk-averse until it comes to wasting money or putting their heads in the sand when their top-bods/council members end up in the press for serious wrong-doing.

They handled your interview badly. Would you really want to work for them and be judged by their inadequate HR in future? I think you can do better, a lot better.

There are so many people not in prison who absolutely should be - and your misdemeanours are so minor. Please don't let these professionals make you feel in any way inadequate.

Whilst you're waiting, could you contact your placements (if any of them are appealing to you) to find out if there are any openings or any recommendations they could give to finding new opportunities?

You've had some amazing support and advance on this thread. I just wanted to add my vote of confidence in you. Write the interview off and let it fade away. Brew

Just read you got the job. Congratulations.

I work for the LA with an enhanced PVG. At a few interviews I have signed a form to say I have no criminal convictions. It could have been that. Where as they knew about yours and you went in to tell them too. So those who don't have any sign a form to say they don't have them so if something comes up HR can pull the form saying "eh well you said you had no convictions."

So pleased for you, OP.

I think someone having past convictions when you are young who then turns their life around is pretty ideal experience for a support worker!

NotAllPets · 13/07/2023 13:53

Sure you want to work for this person? She sounds like a tit.
